Active PEG Sharing and Distribution Initiatives

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I know some of this is covered in the Wiki History of PEG 2.0 Initiatives Tony started, but I want to break this out into large, multi-station projects, smaller regional projects, and topic/genre specific projects for the panel I'm participating in at the ACM's national conference. I want the goal of this panel to be to give an overview of everything that's going on in this space, but focus on the question Lauren Glenn Davitian asked at the end of the ACM East -
Expanding the Reach of Community Programming Panel
about the plan for all these groups to work together.

Large Projects

ACM sharing project (still no URL, really!?!) - This project is managed by Rich Desimone. The goal is to develop standards for metadata and encoding across multiple playback server vendors as well as APIs for moving files between a central location (at Princeton University) and individual locations.

Number of Videos in the Available: 125 approx (early beta testing).
Average Number of Videos Transferred per month: ??
Average GB or TB in bandwidth: ??
Cost of bandwidth: compliments of Telvue as of now
Subscription Option: No (considering it in future releases)
Creative Commons: Yes

Open Media Project - No sharing yet. The beta version of the Open Media System has been implemented (at least in part) at 7 public access stations. Denver has been using a version of this system the longest and has more than 3,000 videos in their archive with a Creative Commons license and standard metadata structure. The other beta stations are just starting to build their archive. The next phase of this project is to start moving these files between locations. The standard metadata structure allows videos pulled in from another station to be treated like a library book. Each library has a different size and number of shelves, but because they use the same system it's easy to determine where a new book belongs. As part of their Knight NewsChallenge grant, Deproduction is required to make an install profile available to stations before the end of 2009 and begin sharing files between locations using the Open Media System in 2010.

Number of Videos in the Available: 3000+
Average Number of Videos Transferred per month: 0

Subscription Option: Yes. Every project has an RSS feed that includes the .flv. New feeds can easily be created with Views to syndicate a stations Top 10.

Access Humboldt's partnership with the Internet Archive - Jesse, John and the tech team from Access Humboldt have their own session at the ACM about the Community Media Archive, but make no mistake... this project is as much about distribution as any other project.

Number of Videos in the Available: ~ 1100
Average Number of Videos Transferred per month: 50
Average GB or TB in bandwidth: 3MB/s symmetric

Miro's Public Access project - Miro Local TV will be an open source tool that will let anyone build a local video community in their city and town, around all the great content that’s already being posted to video blogs and large video sharing sites. As part of this Knight funded project, the Participatory Culture Foundation will be partnering with local public or public access stations in 5 cities and towns this year (and 12 more next year), so that each of these sites will be run by existing media orgs with deep roots in the community.
