Thank you to all who attended.
Aaron, Seth, Tony, Kevin Finney, and myself. We had a whole pizza per person and most of us left with plenty of pizza to take home. Thanks again Tony Valle & Promethius Consulting, LLC for sponsoring the location and the food and drink.
What was going to be a lightning round turned into Neil and I just splitting the teaching time in half. Neil showed off Aegir and features, and I showed off some custom modules I'v been working on that utilize hook_menu, hook_block, hook_theme, theme_hook, drupal_add_css, db_query, and a few other functions.

Question:
The Aegir system, that Neil covered, requires some Linux knowledge and a host that offers root access.
The material i covered requires PHP knowledge or at least a desire for PHP knowledge.

Last night was a 'heady' meeting. What does this group really want from the meetings? At the HackFests we had 20 people; 7 from Ohio, 2 Hoosiers from outside 317. The 4 hr format and the intense yet flexible nature of the format seems to work well.

I believe that the Dudenhofer brothers, me, Neil, and Tony are ok with these private meetings. [Hey Tony... We should probably drop down to fewer pizzas though!] :-) But I want to know what the rest of the group would like.
To that end... Here's a list of what some other groups have done or are doing.
[1] meeting in restaurants or bars.
[2] meeting the exact same day of the month every month. [php meets 1st wednesday of each month]
[3] preparing very organized meeting presentations, often involving guest speakers. [do we want an organized 90 minute presentation on a single topic?]

Does any one have any thoughts on this? I learned some things last night that will be valuable to me therefore I have a desire to come again. For many of you who have showed up a few times, is there anything we can do for you? Is Drupal something you are still pursuing? If so, what can the Indy Drupal Users Group do for you?
The website you are on right now says there are 85 members of this group. I believe that over half of that 85 are out of state OR are hours away from Indianapolis. But if there are at least a dozen ppl in the 317 area code I am curious if this group can meet any needs you have. If you don't want to say something in the public forum, feel free to email me : groups "AT" dougvann.com

Thanks for any feedback.
See you at the August meeting!

Hey Doug, Last week was very

ldweeks's picture

Hey Doug,

Last week was very busy for my wife and I, so I decided to stick around at home last night. I'm kinda kicking myself, though, because I know that I would have appreciated talking about both topics a whole lot. I'm in the middle of learning how to write modules, so I'm sure that I would have had many questions for you!

So, from my end, these types of "heady" meetings are exactly what I'd like to see - I just didn't make it up this time. Having the meeting at the same time every month is very important, and having it in the same location each time would be nice.

You made a parenthetical comment about a PHP meetup the first wednesday of each month - where can I find more information about that?

Mondays just haven't been

Mondays just haven't been available for me for the past 6 months, and weekends are completely out. I would have been to probably half during that time if it had been a Wednesday or a Thursday. Unfortunately my schedule just didn't allow for it.

I like the presentation format we have had in the past, and a guest speaker once a quarter or twice a year would be a nice change of pace. I don't think a restaurant or a bar is very conducive to high-end discussions, but maybe I'm just easily distracted!

Unfortunately, I think it's just summer, and people are busy with kids, vacations, etc... I would look to see an uptick in attendance as the weather starts to turn cooler.

Right....
Tou are so right. Season does play a roll.
Our largets weekday meeting was December 15th last year. It was definitely COOL then, but HOT in a room full of geeks!
