Can we organize a Drupal training event on Global Drupal Day - September 14th in Mumbai ?

Overview

Drupal Global Training Days is an initiative by the Drupal Association to introduce new and beginning users to Drupal. The Drupal Association is partnering with training companies to make this happen. Once a quarter, free or low cost training events will take place around the world with one of two curriculums:

"Introduction to Drupal," a full day training on the basics of Drupal. Attendees will leave having successfully built a Drupal site. It is ideal for those interested in exploring Drupal as a career path.
"What is Drupal?" This half-day workshop will address the basics of Drupal, and will give an overview to those interested in evaluating or implementing Drupal.
Each training company can make it their own event and provide more detail on their web pages.

We can have a small Global Drupal Day in September somewhere around IIT Bombay or places that can easily host it. I think this can help create a general awareness about Drupal.

Yes , you are correct , we do not have enough time to plan for Drupalcamp, something we can do probably keep for November/December.

Regarding the venue, I think IIT Bombay is a good choice.

How about the Agenda ? Apart from one day Drupal training on "intro to Drupal" and half day training on "What is Drupal " should we also plan for something else? like code sprint or some advanced sessions?

I agree with Rachit. Agenda could include something for everyone - right from Drupal newbies (intro sessions) to seasoned Drupalers (code sprints, casestudies, ...)

Also, we can call for people who want to present with their topics. There could be a poll on sessions then. This would ensure maximum participation.

Before we submit event to DA , i believe we need to put planned efforts to collect more information and get a solid curriculum in place, remember this will be reviewed by DA.

IMHO, we must look at following,

As per the guidelines mentioned at http://drupal.org/learn-drupal , event should be focussed on basics of drupal i.e. intro and about stuff.Other events like code sprints etc, if we are including, has to be seperate and should not be mentioned in curriculum.We can discuss on what to include and what not.
Who would be our target audience ? I believe most Drupal shops in Mumbai.Pune will not require introduction to Drupal. So whom are we targeting? Student community ? newbies and what would be turnout with this approach.Should we reach out to colleges ?
As per the DA guidelines , participants must be a training company. Under which company would you be registering this event? Looking at DA guidelines , i feel they have made it company specific, which means each company can conduct seperate training , but i believe, community driving this event would result in better outcome. what do you think ?
Venue will play a big role here.Ideally any company sponsored premises will probably not the best option, we will have to go for some educational institute , IIT Bombay could be one option. Availability is a question?
What will be the training schedule and training topics? and who all would be the speakers/trainers.We will need this information before we submit the event curriculum to DA.
Website, we can probably reuse the DrupalCamp Mumbai site.
Deadline for submitting the event is 13 Aug Monday, which means we must be ready with curriculum for submission by 9/10th Aug.
Who will Fund/ sponsorship for the event? who and how we need to figure our.
We need to form an organizing committee to take care of the major tasks and share the roles and responsibilities.Who all are in?
Any media partner ? like last year we had LFY covering the event.

All, Lets discuss these points and come up with solid game plan.I am working parallely on training schedule and training topics, which i will share most probably by this weekend, we can have discussion over it before we finalize.Any suggestions here will be welcome.

Regarding Target Audience: I would suggest we should target newbies and those people who want to use Drupal but can't because of the steep learning curve involved in learning Drupal development. Getting student community will be awesome, if anyone knows about any FOSS groups or PHP groups, we can publicize using them. Reaching out to colleges might be a problem, if we know people who are in colleges, that might help. Also, we can help contacting Drupal groups in Pune and nearby areas.

Regarding Training Company: If anyone can volunteer for this it would be great. +1 for Community based event.

Regarding Venue: Can anyone help get the venue at IITB or anyother place. We had DrupalCamp Mumbai at IITB last time. Can some one who was in the organizing committee over there help here ?

I think we should soon get a website up and running, and then post out a CFP and probably hunt out for probable speakers.

Sponsors will also have to be hunted for. We will need to come up with a sponsorship plan.

Regarding Media Partner: I know the editor of DevWorx magazine, he might be of some help. Also, any leads would be good.

I don't have idea about the Drupal Community in Mumbai. We clearly need some community feedback and leads. I am in for any help and whatever stuff is required. I will try to find people and keep updating you guys. If anyone can help in any of these issues it would be a lot of help.

I think getting more people (students) who are interested in Drupal to attend would be the biggest challenge.

Rest could be divided and handled.

This initiative is specifically for companies who want to hold training sessions.

What I would suggest is that we hold a general Meetup of all Drupalers in Mumbai. This wouldn't be one company initiative and also we could have sessions that interest seasoned Drupalers.

Also since 14 Sept is Friday, we could have it on 15th (more convenient, I think).

We could use this open forum to organize and utilize its mailing list, get ideas, venue, etc.

I think its a Drupal training day! comes almost trice in a year.
We can do community meet-up any other time.

Its our responsibility to make students & interested people aware of Drupal. We should do something for newbies & we can do a parallel track for advance session also.

I think all the Drupal shops & individuals from Mumbai, Pune should come together for this.

Location:

I think IITB is going to be very difficult location for any student, why should they go there to know, which is unknown to them? Instead we can go for any other college which is near to any railway station & lets hunt some college which has IT as stream, so we can get their student as a participants.

Coverage:

I'll definitely get involved in it personally to make it possible. I'll use my contacts for this. Everyone would do it for sure.

Great thoughts guys, I second Shree's opinion on keeping our focus on Drupal Training , introducing Drupal to newbies, students , and others who want to know Drupal and use Drupal, meetup can happen separately though.

Our next steps should be following

Action Items :

Release and freeze the training schedule for 14th Sep.
Prepare the curriculum, to be submitted to DA.
Trainers who would be delivering the training.We have to make sure Trainers have excellent good Drupal background and training capability.

Discussion Points :
1. Finalize on mode of participation, Either each participating company can separately post this to DA and can have seperate registration page , but the Training can be centralized and be put as a joint effort.Opinions ?
2. Venue, will it be centralized or can happen at multiple locations? IMHO centralized.
3. Registration page for each company, in case we follow above approach
4. Promotions , who , when and how?

I am working on Training schedule for 14th Sep, will share it with you guys by Sunday Evening, we can the discuss on it and freeze it.

No separate posts, No multiplicity. Centralized is the best way to go. Lets update DrupalCamp Mumbai site regarding the event, start promoting via social media. Start with a DoAttend page once location and dates(some people would like it on Saturday, I think its a great idea) are finalized. Then, we can have a CFP and work on the schedule.

I think we should divide the work to groups/people who would like to volunteer.
Anybody would like to volunteer for venue, sponsors, promotions ? Lets have a show of hands for this or if you know anyone who could help, please rope them into this discussion !
Also, can we get some information about the previous Drupal Camps and Code Sprints, how many people came and so on, to get a rough estimate of number of people we should expect at the event and budget, so that we can come up with a reasonable sponsorship plan.

The only reason I said IITB was we had a DrupalCamp there, so maybe I thought it would be easier. I have no problems with venue whatsoever. If someone can arrange for a better venue it would be really great. For options, I guess RGIT, Andheri and MPSTME, Vile Parle should be good choices if anyone can arrange.

I am very new to this drupal thingy and am looking forward to meet an interact with people who have used and know about this drupal.

Also, if any help required for organizing such an even count me in.

I also like the idea of centralized site for this event "DrupalCampMumbai".

And for start if i may suggest, one person volunteering and collecting names of all those who are interested in the event, which i guess is a good approach. This person shall be in constant contact with all those interested and will bridge the communication gap.

Team one would be responsible for making a site, which will be used for registration, taking polls for venue, date, time etc etc.

Drupal training day will be held on 14th and 15th Sep.
14th Sep will cover Introductions and basic Drupal sessions along with few BoF sessions.
15th Sep will cover Beginner and Developer oriented Drupal session which will talk more on development.There will be BoF sessions on 15th as well.
We have discussed on venue, which is yet not finalized.We are keeping following educational institues as a viable option.

2) Why Drupal; Comparative analysis of Drupal with other CMS.
3) Case studies / Sites using Drupal
4) When to and not to use Drupal?
5) Where to find Drupal and Drupal installation
6) Drupal terminology (e.g. Nodes, Blocks, Modules, Terms, Taxonomy, Users, Comments, Entities, Fields)
7) Inside of Drupal
a) Overview of each item of admin menu (e.g. Content, Appearance)
b) Create and edit content
c) Work with menus from admin
d) Content type and its usage
e) Block and where to find them
f) Working with roles and users
8) Getting a functional site set up in 30-45mins.
9) Using contrib modules/themes/distributions, and getting community-based support
10) Helping improve Drupal. Adding issues, testing, reviewing, documentation and translations, etc.

  10)   Using some popular modules , Views / Rules etc

I am in touch with DA coordinators regarding the event, i will post an update regarding following by Evening today

Finalized and Approved Event schedule
Registration page and event promotion strategy
Venue (I am suppose to hear back from few educational institute in Mumbai)

With this we can begin the promotion and open registration for the event.

Also i saw there were 822 members in group India and 217 in group Mumbai, only if there was a way through which we could mail these guys about the event we organizing, it would simply be fabulous, or else i would have to start from post about this event on every post of group Mumbai and India......
