User group meeting
Hi everyone,
It was great so many people turned up last month, especially with the short notice. Hopefully some of the regulars who couldn't make it last time can this time!
We'll have it at The Elephant again unless anyone has any other suggestions? We haven't had the elephant stuffing peaks of attendance that we had a few months ago so hopefully we'll be all right
If anyone's got anything techie on their mind, feel free to drop a comment here beforehand so the group can rustle up extra helpful answers!
Joe

Count me in. Did you watch
Count me in.
Did you watch Dries' drupalcon keynote? Was pretty interesting, especially the Drupal 8 stuff.
not yet
but ill have a look soon. I know the kind of stuff that (should be) coming though and am pretty excited. It could solve a lot of issues I have with Drupal!
Looks like they have config
Looks like they have config management cracked - fingers crossed!
I won't be there
I'm speaking at unified.diff in Cardiff that evening. :)

Holiday
Im away on a last minute holiday unfortunately.
Will be at the next one!
why not!
I should be able to make it this month.. but I don't know for how many more months my attendance will be relevant for, Drupal projects at work are finishing up, and I seem to be sliding back into other technologies...
Of course, I do have a bunch of personal drupal projects it's important I keep on top of (and, as I'm more than sure you have noticed, I absolutely love any excuse for a few pints and a bit of techy talk)
what stuff?
Are you going back towards Java? Or is it something new again?
javajava
it looks like I will be heading back onto Team-Java at work, yup. but I've also just got myself properly qualified up as a Salesforce.com developer - using their CRM for SaaS and PaaS stuff for B2B clients... (uses a propriety language called APEX)
leaves not a lot of room for consumer web and B2C.
I can't see why I won't keep in touch with Drupal though, because any realistic freelance or personal web-project work I do is going to be with the big D after all :)
Newbie
Hello everyone,
I am new guy in this group and wanted to say hi to everyone on the meetup. Unfortunately, I might be unable to come in time, should I still 'sign in' while being uncertain?
But in any case, I am highly anticipated next meet up will give me an opportunity to meet all of you and share some fun.
You don't have to come if you
You don't have to come if you click sign up ;-) it, it just send you a reminder email on the day.and we might be there a while, so if it's not out of your way just stick your head in if you get a chance!
getting started
Alex, a young artist (http://www.feltipen.co.uk/port.html) with a head for code, wants to find out more about Drupal. Do you reckon I should bring him to the pub? How do you feel about giving him some pointers on getting started?
see y'all
See you all tonight. I have worn my favourite grey chequey shirt especially.. :)
@Alex.. just so long as the "young" artist isn't too young for a pub (I think the elephant might be 18+ only) I believe everyone is welcome!
sorry
i'd forgotten to reply to alex's comment. cheers simon. i don't think they'd make too much of a fuss if they weren't drinking but its good to mention. and sure we can take your friend through some basics, try and find what they want to achieve and give some pointers!
Not that young
Alex is 22, so I guess not really young. I'm 46, so I think he's practically a foetus.
Also - Who is using Manarth's Project Oscar?
im not and havent actually
im not and havent actually noticed it before but looks good! not sure if he's around today but im sure marcus would be happy to talk about it a bit at some point.
that'd be a good thing when we finally do some skillswap/learning stuff. i think we got a bit stuck on the venue before but my new job is in the old pervasive media studios and we can use that - so might get some momentum back in those discussions!
In London, mostly
Sadly I'm spending pretty much all of my time in London these days, so won't be around at a Bristol meetup for a while.
If you can make it to DrupalcampNW, I'll probably be around there to talk about Oscar :-)

no excuses for me not to come
no excuses for me not to come then, I'm in there as well!
Wish I could have made it on
Wish I could have made it on Wednesday. What did I miss?
well..
Well.. for about the third meet in a row, I managed to get the collective brain trying to help me come up with ideas on how to build a super-villain robot in my garage..?
We also discussed D8 quite a bit.
Features got mentioned.
I think we tried to organise a formal meetup with presentations again.
(someone was going to open a call for papers thread to pick some speakers)
We drew attention to the Web Folk Talk night in October.
I remember discussing forum/advanced forum/artesian forum and the associated modules, and then we discussed which aspects of "core" could really be cut, to make Drupal a little lighter, and more durable. This lead to a discussion on alternative light-weight PHP CMS platforms + the good old days of writing propriety authentication/persistence subsystems.
And for once we didn't discuss responsive design.
(We might well also be in the background of some C4 TV show which was being recorded over the road for a bit though)
d8
I'm sure I was talking to someone about web services and context core initiative who I told I'd post a link - so here you go http://munich2012.drupal.org/content/web-services-and-symfony-core-initi...
re last meeting, we talked about what would be right to talk about at a skill swap, and how the basics of drupal are pretty boring to most of us who've been using it for ages. maybe one small intro for people who are new but we talked about it actually being okay for the talks not to be directly about Drupal, it being just a context within which to talk about deployment, responsive or whatever - given that you know your audience will understand a drupal related use case even if all the details isnt specifically about Drupal
We also have a venue in the offices of my new employer (the old pervasive media offices). I'm guessing we'll do something in the last week or two of October? more on that later
Advanced Forum?
I must get over to one of the Bristol meet-ups some time soon...
I'm curious to know what was said about Advanced Forum; I'm the co-maintainer for the D6 branch, and always interested to hear from people who are using the module. Happy to hear honest opinions; I think we all know it's not a perfect fit for every scenario.
I'm currently trying to get a full stable release of the 6.x-2.x branch out, but struggling a little finding the time to do so. Could always do with some help testing (and writing) patches!
talk
could i put you down (providing you're available on the day) for a brief run through of the features of advanced forum and how to get the most out of it, when to/not to use it etc. for a knowledge share session?
.
I'm curious, too, but it's such a long swim to Bristol... :)
Sorry I missed the meet, but
Sorry I missed the meet, but I look forward to meeting you all next time.
I would be keen to get involved with skillswap/learning stuff as well.
