Village of New Paltz
New Paltz is very centralized along main street so that most things are accessible with a short walk. The west side of mainstreet is the compact heart of New Paltz with bars, restaurants, and shops. SUNY New Paltz campus is just south of there (5 min walk) and the larger and more spread out stores are spread out on the east side of Main street and are also accessible by foot, but a car or the loop bus makes things a little easier. It's probably unlikely you'd need to go that far anyway to find what you want.
Custom Google Map with Lecture Center and Points of Interest, incl Food, Banks, Bus Station, Bars, and Parking .The list of things in that area of main street was too long for me to finish, so this is the highlights.
Walking
The streets of New Paltz are VERY safe, but it still may be best to not walk alone at night. If you wanted to have a nice walk, the rail trail near the guilded otter is a nice detour.
Biking
If so inclined you can rent bikes from the local bike shop. There are also free bikes around town (painted all white). The one spot I know of is by the guilded otter. The rail trail is a nice mostly flat ride.
Car
Main street can be a little crowded, especially in the fall when leaves change color. Parking on side streets is usually the best and free (pay attention to signs) there are also public parking lots near main street (see map above). Parking on Campus requires a visitors parking pass from the machine at the College Welcome center ($2/day) and parking is restricted to lots marked for visitors. See the map above.
Loop Bus
If you did need to travel further for some reason or have difficulty walking, there is a 30 min loop bus that runs through campus, main street, and goes as far as the thruway exit. New Paltz Loop Bus Schedule
Cabs
if for some reason you are in a hurry, or need a cab there are a couple in NP. Joey's taxi uses hybrid vehicles for those who are so inclined.
Getting around Campus

The campus buildings are mostly compact on the north side of campus, and that is where the lecture center is. It is a beautiful campus and can be easily walked. Here is a Campus Map.
