What topics/presentations would you like to see in 2013?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

In the interest of boosting attendance and providing a better overall experience for members of this group, I recommend that we start getting ideas together for presentations at our meetups in 2013.

So I'd like to hear from our active members what topics they'd like to see covered (or if you'd like to present on a topic yourself). No idea/presentation should be considered too small or non-important. If there's some aspect of Drupal that you find confusing, or if you're struggling to even get started with Drupal, let us know so we can get some plans in place.

Here's a random list of ideas off the top of my head to get us started (just thinking out loud really):

  • Beginner's guide to developing in Drupal
  • Keeping your site secure
  • How to go from a psd file to a beautiful Drupal site

I do have a presentation that I think I could do well with. I could give a presentation about what render arrays are in Drupal 7 and how to use them to build html elements easily. I've developed quite the love affair with render arrays and couldn't imagine coding in Drupal without them so if someone else wants to know more I'd love to share.

Your turn!

Another couple of

Another couple of topics:

  • Finding performance bottlenecks (why is my site slow?).
  • Preventing spam on my site - new users, new comments, and webforms.

I'd love to present on both these topics, as I have a lot of experience in both areas for sites both small and large :)

Would love to hear about your experience with render arrays; I use them here and there, but probably nowhere near as effectively as I could. I don't do as much theming as I'd like, but I like seeing how other people approach it.

Great ideas!

Love both of these ideas, particularly the performance one.

Some more topics

Some topics I'd like to learn more about:

  • Drupal Commerce - I've used Ubercart a few times and am interested in similarities, differences and general setup
  • Creating an installation Profile
  • Panels - for some reason, just have never used them, but seems like almost everybody else has
  • A live example of assisting on an issue queue item, submitting a patch - I nominate Jeff to present on this :)

Will post more if I think of them.

+1 on render arrays, that sounds like a fascinating topic.

+1 for issue queue idea

I love the idea for going through an issue queue item, particularly as regards submitting a patch.

If there is ever a meeting that we have a lot of people there that are quite new to Drupal, I would be happy to do a presentation on getting started with Drupal, based on my recent experience.

I would also love to see a presentation on Panels Everywhere. I might even be able to do one, a little down the road.

Another +1 for issue queue idea

I would also love going through an issue queue item or even devoting a meeting to working on an issue queue. Is there any interest in having maybe a separate monthly meeting for getting together and working on the drupal 8 issue queue perhaps?

I really like all the other ideas as well. I would add 2 more though. One would be to discuss dev environment setup, I know this is a very personal thing but if a discussion of a couple possibilities would be great.

Also, I am currently trying to get a handle on the theme layer. Something on theme preprocessing functions. And theme hook functions.

If we want to do a meeting on

geerlingguy's picture

If we want to do a meeting on the 20th of this month (don't know if that would be possible or not), maybe we could do the issue queue thing. I volunteer to get people up and started—I'll go through the process of finding a 'novice' issue, reading through the issue, and deciding on how to go about either reviewing/improving an existing patch, or creating a new patch.

And this also ties into the dev environment setup, because doing things like reviewing or creating patches requires a local development environment of some sort :-)

20th

I am totally game for a meeting on the 20th, and would love to have you go through an issue. I'm just wondering how many people are going to be able to come that close to Christmas. Could we maybe plan on doing this for a meeting in January?

Either way would be fine with

Either way would be fine with me; however I'm expecting a child sometime in early January, so I can't promise I'll be there :)

So here's the rub. I didn't

So here's the rub. I didn't create an event for December since I assumed that most wouldn't be able to attend so close to Christmas. I did however already book the Millstone so it is available if we want to meet. I personally would rather hang with my family since the kids are out of school but if there's an overwhelming number of people who still want to meet then I could make arrangements.

I'm voting for January

I think we are probably best off waiting for the next meeting until January. Maybe we could plan on doing the issue queue presentation in February, and go with one of the other ideas for January? I'm just not thinking we're going to get much of a turnout on Dec. 20th...

Sounds good! Probably won't

Sounds good! Probably won't be able to make the Jan. meetup, but I'm all in for Feb.
