Is anyone thinking about or working on an improved ajax checkout? The goal would be combining checkout screens, logintoboggan login/registration, and payment into a one- or two-screen form wizard with in-place editing of user-entered data. So users don't feel the burden of creating an account and navigating a form obstacle course.
It seems theoretically possible using some javascript libraries, form_alter, etc.
We'd like to work on this for the 4.7 version of goodstorm and are looking for developers and any sites which would be interested in co-sponsoring development.

Not that this is a high enough priority for myself to focus on, it just be nice if it was around :)

I would not (personally) proceed on an ajax checkout until a decision is made about a unilateral approach to handling ajax in the core. this thread has some discussion, but there are plenty of other threads I imagine too.
There are people who rely on this decision for their SoC projects, so hopefully it is a decision that will be made soon...!! :-/
no dependencies
please, lets not introduce dependencies where none exist. it is good to know that library changes are being considered, but not good to halt ajax development until they are resolved. this could very well lead to nothing.
and the risks?
You don't see any risk? Or the risk is very low?
My first worry is about wasting time learning a library: only to find that everyone else has started using something else. My second concern is finding myself needing multiple libraries for what I need (eg. different modules use different libraries).
For these reasons, I have been putting off the desire to starting using AJAX for about 3 months.
