User group meeting

So, it's time to start planning the June meetup. It'll be on June 5th, starting at 6PM for the first talk at 7PM. Probably at the Golden Guinea depending on if we can find a nicer venue. I'll update & post on here once we've got a location confirmed. Please sign up if you're coming, so we know how badly we need more space!

In the meantime, we need to sort out some talks. Anyone like to volunteer?

Location-wise, I can't complain, as it's only a few doors down from where I now live.

Went to the Three Sugar Loaves last week, but they're even more constrained on space. I know we moved from there because it became a bit expensive, but The Elephant's room upstairs - assuming we get a similar turnout to the one I last attended - is of a decent size. They don't have a projector, though.

As for talks, I could try doing something perhaps - maybe one about Symfony components in Drupal, or dependency injection. Not sure how much of an appetite there is for D8 stuff right now, particularly as a lot of it is up in the air at the moment.

talk on Entities

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

I would like to volunteer to do a talk around Entities.

The when and how of custom entities, advantages, disadvantages, missing bits (and where to get them from) etc.

Not sure exactly the format but would be interested to find out how people are using them and how they are rolling their own.

Excellent

Chris - if you're still up for giving that talk, that'd be great!

(Sorry about the slow reply - been distracted by a site launch and bank holiday ;) Hopefully you've still got enough time to prepare.)

Venues

Upstairs at the Elephant will probably "charge" you with a minimum bar spend of around £200 - which is fine if you make it, but a pain for the depositor if you don't. (not much seating either, just benches for maybe 20)

The Llandogger Trow will book you out the Jack bar (the long room parallel to the main bar for £30 (1/2 day - so long as you are using the bar, £50 if you won't be drinking from the bar) - if you really plead though, especially on a Wednesday, you might find you can book it for guaranteed spend. They have a projector and screen too. (they lend us the screen at no cost, but not 100% on the projector). The room is huge.

Upstairs at the Gryphon is worth a shot, I think the room would be free, so long as you're using the bar. No projector.

Upstairs at the Stag and Hound used to be a popular choice, but I don't know if it still runs for user group meetings, might be a live music room now, had screen + projector, and was free. Used to book up early though as it was one of the best. Definitely give them a message on FB?

ToTos (over the river from the apple) is a good shout, has screens + ceiling projector, you can book the upstairs bar for a couple of hours on a minimum spend of about a 100 odd nick... they then might open the bar to public, or push you down into the main bar (depending on how bored the bar girl is getting through your presentations)

If I think of any more, I'll drop another message :D
(I've been to a few pubs)

That's some amazing pub

That's some amazing pub knowledge there :) I'll give some of them a shout and see what looks good. Having a screen and projector isn't so much of an issue, as we can use mine. (Although not having to cart the whole set down to the venue would be nice...)

I'm in awe of Simons

I'm in awe of Simons extensive pub knowledge!

I have nothing to add to the discussion, just wanted to say that really.

Gryphon or Llandogger?

chrisdolby's picture

Hi,

Things have dried up here since the other week.

Should we try for something at the gryphon or the Llandogger?

Maybe we should try for a social thing as we're short on time and the weather may be nice? I've heard a few people mention that they'd rather just come for drinks once every while rather than do talks every time.

Alternate perhaps

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

Agree with Chris above,

I am up for doing a talk but probably need a bit more than a week notice confirmed to set up slides, links and content etc.

Would be hard to maintain the impetus and size of the last meetup on a monthly basis?

Drinks and chat in Llandogger would get my vote, i would like to conduct a little informal survey about entities with whomever turns up, but that would just be handful of yes/no questions (perhaps follow up with an online version).

Oops, sorry - only just saw

Oops, sorry - only just saw this reply. Didn't get a notification of it for some reason... It'd be good to try and keep the momentum going if we can. That said, I've no objection to a month off the talks if people are feeling a bit talked out.

Next month would be great.

The preparation is all in my head at the moment and I committed to doing some heavyweight diy this weekend, would very much like to do one for July though.

There will be lot of links to resources etc. as well so I will be putting lots on on line also,

one month of talks and the

one month of talks and the next month informal sounds good to me (although I've missed all the talks so far!)

Could do a social week and

blacklabel_tom's picture

Could do a social week and then a talk week, would give people enough time to prepare and we might get some ideas from the social week that we could do a talk on the next week?

I'll be well up for the entities talk Chris btw!

Cheers

Tom

See you next week?

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

Hopefully doing a talk in July, left it a little late this month (see above) as wasn't sure what was going on.

If we have a social next week, might try to survey the ground a little on Entities, conduct a little survey, test the waters, might be a fertile ground for other talk ideas.

Was hoping to catch up with you last month, hopefully will both be there next week.

Sounds good to me, I'll be
