Return of SWDUG!

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Precedent are planning the return of South Wales Drupal User Group (SWDUG) in July with a meetup at our offices in Cardiff Bay. Dates that we're thinking of:

  • 2nd/4th/5th July
  • A day between the 8th-12th July

Happy to go with the popular vote. :)

If anyone would be interested in doing a talk for the first meetup, that would be great. All levels of Drupaler are welcome, and drinks and snacks will be provided.

Excellent news!

I can make any of those dates so I'm easy (very much like a Sunday morning).

Sounds fab - would be nice to re-ignite the Drupal scene in south Wales.

I could make 10th - 12th July so if it's then, count me in.

Sounds like a plan, i will be

Sounds like a plan, i will be doing Drupal again by then so count me in too.

I will be Swansea based so a late ish start 6:30-7 start would suite me, but i can always gate crash later else.

Some evening between the 8th and 12 would be best for me.

I'm thinking maybe a 6pm

I'm thinking maybe a 6pm start with a talk starting at 7pm?

Hi all, I'm really grateful

instanceofjamie's picture

Hi all,

I'm really grateful that you've taken the time to put this together, and I'd love to offer my help. If you want someone to talk, I'm up for it. I'm pretty good at talking, I do it a lot. ;-) I can offer up a recent talk on Jenkins and Continuous Integration (with my friends from Middle Earth), or perhaps something more philosophical, or maybe even something to do with pure Drupal ;-)

I know we've gone over this before, but there were reasons I took pains to try to separate SWDUG away from being organised by companies - yes, yes, I know we did this with SubHub, but I came around to thinking it was the wrong way to organise SWDUG at the time, and that opinion hasn't changed, for me (even though I am grateful for the offer of a venue, of course).

I'd prefer to see the meetup move to a location in central Cardiff, if possible. A lot of people were discouraged from attending by using a location in the bay, before. It would also make it easier for the meetup to survive beyond an individual's tenure at a company, avoid potential embarrassment for the company should they choose to go in a separate direction, allow for the organisation to be shared by different groups (Code Enigma, I'm sure, would be willing to help out), and avoid any undue bias that might present itself. Oh, and give credit to individuals, rather than to people as employees.

I've just spoken to the Owain Glyn Dwr in town, and they'd love to have us there. It's a free venue, too, so it wouldn't cost anyone anything (save the cost of food and drink, but I'm sure we can get sponsors for that).

I guess most folks are pretty easy about it, if they've already made the commitment to come along - mostly I'm trying to consider those that rely on public transport, work in town, or have to come from further afield.

What does everyone else think? I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just really aware of what's gone before, and would rather not go around in circles...

Happy to do these meetups

opdavies's picture

Happy to do these meetups wherever, do they have facilities to do talks – projector etc, whereas in the office we’ve got a meeting room that we can use to host the talks.

The hope was further meetings could take place in different places, different sponsors and alike.

If people are discouraged from travelling to the Bay, then a central Cardiff location may be better. Thoughts, anyone?

Yeah, they apparently have

instanceofjamie's picture

Yeah, they apparently have big TVs that will take a VGA input, and have a projector and screen that they sometimes use for playing sporty things on (what a waste!), but I can also get hold of a projector from my Bro in law. There's also free wifi (via The Cloud, which is pretty good if you've not used it before).

Might be worth a visit ahead of time to check, if you want?

I like the idea of attracting varied sponsors, but if we don't have to rely on them as much, we'll avoid the stop-start nature of the previous events, and build up a proper momentum, which would allow for things like event series, where we can get into some really interesting topics.

The only date I can see that's definitely out for me is July 11th - it's parents evening.

I've been there before with

opdavies's picture

I've been there before with family for food, but not for a meetup or anything. Definitely up for checking it out beforehand.

If it is decided to go there, I'll speak to the guys at Precedent and see if they can still help out and maybe sponsor the food or something.

On a different note, I've

opdavies's picture

On a different note, I've done some work recently with the LDAP module and integration with Active Directory for a client, including some customisation for their specific use case, so I'd be more than happy to share my experiences with that and do a talk. I'm hoping to get the client-side Developers to come to the meetup as well (some new faces), and possibly get them involved with the talk itself.

A couple of our Drupal Developers from the Worthing office may be in Cardiff at that point as well, so it would be great to get them to come along as well as long as that's OK with everyone?

LDAP sounds good - we've been

instanceofjamie's picture

LDAP sounds good - we've been doing something similar too. I tried not to complain too much about the Windows VM on our network...

I popped into the Owain Glyn Dwr on Sunday, as I was in town and had just been to Waterstones. It was my first time in there, and even though I'm really not a pubby sort of person, I thought it wasn't bad. There are about 3 different places where we could be seated, with TVs in each location that could be hooked up to a laptop. The walls don't really lend themselves to being projected on, I think, so we'd need to get hold of a screen maybe, if we wanted to do that (although one of the locations has a curtain which might work).

They have availability for July the 8th, 9th, and 10th at the moment, but the sooner we can book, the more certain we can be. I reckon the 10th would be good, myself, as Nic could make it too.

What say you, everyone? Shall I go ahead and book it? Usually I leave it a couple of days, and then if noone else pitches in, I'll go ahead and commit.

thanks for organising this

10th it is then. Jamie - can you book the venue or do you want me to give them a call? We'll also need an event node created.

I'll speak to the other guys at Precedent next week (I'm off today) and see if they're still up for helping out with some food and drinks.

They're terrible at answering

They're terrible at answering the phone, so I've already emailed. Once I have confirmation, I'll get an event node up.

Hope your teeth are feeling happier :-)

Cool. Looking forward to it.
