Any interest in doing a Seattle area Module Port to D8 sprint?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

During the MWDS on August 15-17 there will be a sprint focused on getting modules ported to D8. It seemed like this would be a fun event to participate in and that it might work to do it remotely. I've been tossing the idea around a bit with XJM and it sounds like it could go something like this:

  • Interested people gather (in person or virtually) and join an IRC channel or hangout for the sprint.
  • Intro presentations from the sprint are streamed (loosely speaking, I'm not sure what the actual mechanism would be.
  • Then we pitch into get some modules ported.

This might also be a fun thing to do at PNWDS. We wouldn't have to do it at the same time as the MWDS, but might be able to increase the energy and level of support if we did.

Any expertise in porting? Any interest in something like this?

Sounds like fun, however I cant make the 15-17 as I will be on vacation. I will be at PNWDS though and by that time I hope to have more of a clue on module dev and would love to pitch in.

Definitely in favor of this

Definitely in favor of this idea. If there's enough interest, we should organize one here prior to the PNWDS; regardless, we should set one up there.

I've been doing a bit of D8 work recently, myself; I'd be happy to mentor / facilitate in that capacity. Also happy to help organize, if there's interest.

I like the idea of a D8

I like the idea of a D8 module-port-sprint along with the PNWDS. I would definitely take part and could help with (basic) mentoring.

I also like the idea of trying to piggyback on MWDS' port-sprint. The 15th is SeaDUG. Is there any interest in extending the co-working hours to take part (virtually) in the sprint? Maybe extend the co-working hours to all-day?

Make it 9am to 9pm, all-Drupal, all-day!

If we did, we'll need a location. I'm currently doing a contract for a company in Smith Tower (block and a half from the Hub) and might be able to wrangle a room and some coffee out of them in exchange for good juju in the local Drupal community.

I believe August SEADUG is

I believe August SEADUG is actually going to be elsewhere (Fremont).

I'd be down for an all-day co-working sprint, though not sure where.

All Drupal, All Day!

I really like the idea of doing an all-day co-working thing. I think there is a big module porting effort shaping up and I notice that xjm ("got bunny in core") has added us to the calendar at http://d8cx.org/events – we could be famous!

Co-working sprint day...

mikeker's picture

Can't complain about the location change -- we went from 2 blocks from my work to 10 blocks from my house! :)

One possible location that come to mind: the Fremont library (http://www.spl.org/locations/fremont-branch). A very quick glance at the meeting room policy makes it seem like we could be there for the day. I can check later today if there is interest. This branch is open 11 - 6pm on Thurs.

Library location

I tentatively reserved a room at the Fremont Library from 11 to 6pm on the 15th. It's a block from the SeaDUG meeting, seats 50 or so and has wifi.

Anyone interested in hacking away at some D8 modules? Reply quickly as I'd like to release the reservation if there isn't critical mass.

What's the parking like around the library?

Woot!

mikeker's picture

Glad to hear we've got a few confirmed. I'll check out all-day parking options near the library and post back tomorrow.

Parking

mikeker's picture

There is a lot across the street from the library with all-day parking for $7. Closer to the SeaDUG meeting location, there are several smaller lots around the Adobe buildings that range between $7 and $10/day.

I was in the neighborhood around 11:20 today and the $7 lot under the Fremont bridge (from 34th, turn right on Troll Ave (under the Aurora Bridge), right on Northlake, lot is on the left) still had some empty spots. The $7 lot across from the library was only half full.

If there's no other point of focus we can work on Examples for Developers: https://drupal.org/project/issues/examples?version=8.x

I'll be working on the PHPUnit example: https://drupal.org/node/2032697 and can talk about PHPUnit if anyone wants to listen. :-)

Also, if you want to use PHPUnit in your contrib module development (and you should..) then consider reviewing and RTBC'ing these issues:

Want to hear more!

I would love to hear about getting PHP Unit in my contrib modules. I've got some long-since-defunct SimpleTests that I wish were still active so that I won't introduce any regressions as I'm porting.

Maybe that's what I should be working on this sprint...

Examples Seems Like A Great Idea

I've been working on the Menu example.

In case it's news there is a porting site here http://d8cx.org – we're even on the events list.

There is a tutorial based on converting the pathinfo module here: https://drupal.org/node/1938304.

Also, I found this slide show helpful: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1tMAgNW5-It3reDCne4KmnoH67pMqVhvo....

We're on!

mikeker's picture

Just in case there are any late-comers to this thread, we are on from 11 - 6pm at the Fremont Library for a D8 module-porting (or, really, anything D8 related) sprint. The library allows food and drink in the meeting rooms so bring a lunch or grab something to-go in Fremont.

See you tomorrow!
