Hi all
I am working with an NGO that may be doing a project in India. We may need to add to our Drupal site the ability to have content in Hindi, Tamil and Bengali. Since I don't know about these languages, I am interested if anyone has been doing Drupal sites in them, if anyone has done the interface translation, etc.
This is all grant dependent... :-)

I have been having several discussions with developers about localization of Drupal in India languages for some time now. There hasn't been much work done in this area yet, but I would love to discuss this since there is huge potential and a growing need for drupal in indian languages. Also, would the NGO you work with be open to funding drupal localization projects in India?

I think the first step is to figure out what it would take to localize in a couple of languages. My contact says the priority might be: Hindi, Bengali, Tamil. How might we get a sense of how much work/cost this might be? There may be a chance we can suggest this be included in the grant, but I need to get a sense of scope.
What do you think?
I think the other question is how can a project like this accrue and offer greater good. Are other NGOs in India using Drupal much?

Drupal has not penetrated a lot in India like what it is here in North America. We have our development teams in India but barring our own internal projects for Indian community, we have all our Drupal clients based out of US.
I do know that there has been few projects started towards localization. I was more interested in Gujarati language translation but it still has long way to go.
With funding, this certainly could be possible. Another option is to directly hire and compensate final semster college students in India who can work remotely and give them specific projects.

8 people for 3 weeks

We had 8 people working on this for 3 weeks for D6 release. If you have staffing, I'd love to have someone help in providing technical guidance. Would be great if someone proficient in "Hindi" can manage the team of translators.
Right now we are busy planning DrupalCamp but we certainly take on Hindi version just after that and should be available Q3.

I have seen a Marathi
I have seen a Marathi translation while scrolling through the Drupal translations list. That translation could be for Drupal 4.x or 5.x

Marathi translation
Marathi translation was done by tushar joshi ( from Nagpur) - i had talk with him regarding this and several other opinions to spread Drupal. He has agreed to give his valuable inputs to us
As far as translations are concerned, we have support for many languages, but most of them are incomplete. So i feel, apart from Gujarati, other indian language translations are incomplete. Some work needs to be done on this.

Would the group be interested in doing something about the India link on http://drupal.org/support I think support for India really looks bad to new Indian users on d.o when they see a broken link.
Since http://www.drupalindia.in/ (Gloscon sub) has really made progress with their Gujarati translation with Drupal 6. I'd nominate it to be the current official Indian Drupal support site.
I'm willing to re-direct http://indiandrupal.com (my domain) to http://www.drupalindia.in/ if the owners permit me to do so (I don't have the time or resources to commit to supporting the entire Indian market right now)

yes - lets do that. Lets keep http://www.drupalindia.in as the main focus. Its in D6 and we can open it up and give others accesses as need be and build it with roles, forums, etc to make it a thriving drupal community. We can also create subdomains for various languages. i.e hindi.drupalindia.in, gujarati.drupalindia.in to handle regional stuff.
