I've been looking at what the Region module does, and I am excited at its potential... however... I still don't see that anything actually utilizes it (other than the obvious reasons to use it in flexicharge). Nor have I come across any documentation or discussion about it.
I'd like to find out more about it, as I am working on a couple of international projects that I think would greatly benefit from implementing the power of setting up countries to be within Regions.
One of the things that I'd love to do is setup multiple vendors/merchant gateways based on regions and use the 'location' to automatically display what currency their payment is in (I guess that's based on their user address?).
My organization has partnerships all around the world, and as donations come in from various locations they need to be handled in their respective countries (i.e. if a Canadian user gives toward a project, the money needs to flow through the Canadian office rather the US office for legal purposes).
So.. that's 2 things, but they tie in together. Any insight on either is greatly welcomed!

Location module
Have you taken a look at the location module? It is not specific to Ecommerce and is quite widely used.
Flexicharge uses it, also
Flexicharge uses it, also tax will start using it. It's targetted at E-Commerce.
Regarding Location, I've been working towards integration Location with E-Commerce (optionally of course).
Currency stuff, there is an ec_currency module which needs a review but should go into E-Commerce once it's kosher.
A true multi-currency
A true multi-currency implementation is extremely difficult, and has the problems of stuffing up all your sales reports.
All the reports and sales need to be split by currency and also the General Ledger needs to be split as well or it will just turn into a complete mess.
Implementing something like this is a very large task and will not be happening in v4, and maybe not even in v5
