Meeting Notes - February 5, 2014

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Our normally-scheduled January meet-up landed squarely on New Years Day, so we cancelled it back in December—but February's meet-up was hopping! Eighteen Drupalers attended. After some pizza and chit-chat we got to talking about upcoming events in the local community, particularly the Charlotte Drupal Drive-In and DrupalCamp Florida. We managed to secure a Drupal Association Community Cultivation Grant for the Drive-In, thanks to Shrop's legwork. The funds from the grant will go toward lunch for the event. There was also discussion of what to do with the leftover funds from DrupalCamp Charlotte 2012 and any that might be left from the grant. Some good suggestions were made, having door-prizes was one, and finally having charDUG tee-shirts made was another.

Although we usually like to have the next month's topic picked out, it was noted that it was still up for grabs. As of this writing, nobody has picked one.

Shrop's presentation: "Is Drupal Right For You: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" was our main event. Much to everyone's surprise, his slide deck consisted of more than a single frame with the word "Yes!" on it. What he did present was a reasoned, well-thought-out breakdown of where Drupal is strong and where it's weak; where a potential user may want to employ it and where it may be overkill. A couple interesting side-discussions were sparked along the way: one regarding upgrading versus migrating to major versions of Drupal, and another on recognizing when it's right time to write custom code for a given project.

There was quite a bit of chit-chat after the presentation wrap. Folks hung around for a bit to finish up their conversations and a few folks headed over to the Flying Saucer for an after-meet-up. Our thanks go out to Shrop for his excellent presentation, and to Classic for providing the location!
