FirefoxOS Flyover: Getting to Know Mozilla’s new Mobile Platform

Sean Olsen

FirefoxOS is the new mobile platform from Mozilla, hoping to create a niche in the highly competitive mobile marketplace. To consumers, FirefoxOS positions itself as the community friendly alternative to iPhone and Android.

"We’re out to make a difference, not a profit. When you choose Firefox OS, you’re helping build a brighter future for the Web and users everywhere."

You can think of it as the Occupy-OS. For developers, this upstart platform exposes core functionality through a JavaScript API that allows web developers to build powerful, native applications. In Mozilla’s words,

"Firefox OS is a new mobile operating system, developed by Mozilla, which lets users install and run open web applications created using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript."

Join us as the IE Drupal Meetup goes off topic for a 60-minute flyover of this cool new tool. we hope to accomplish three things: (1) get an understanding of Mozilla’s market positioning strategy; (2) look at some the early reviews of FirefoxOS devices; and (3) walk through the building a simple FireFoxOS application.

Lightning Talks/Open Discussion

Anyone is welcome to inject topics to discuss or briefly share a spiffy helpful module they came across and would like to share with the group.

A coworking space is a shared working environment. Unlike typical office environments, coworking spaces are usually used by multiple companies and/or organizations. Coworking spaces are great for work-at-home professionals, independent contractors, or people who travel frequently and end up working in relative isolation. Coworking spaces are places for the social gathering of people who may be working independently, but who share values, and who are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with like-minded talented people in the same space.

A hackerspace (also referred to as a hacklab, makerspace, or hackspace) is a community-operated physical space where people with common interests, often in computers, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialise and/or collaborate. Please note that “hacking” in this sense refers to “doing creative things with technology” and not “gaining unauthorized access to computer systems.”

Riverside.io is a non-profit coworking and hackerspace located in the heart of Downtown Riverside.
