Target audience

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi colleagues

As other people have also noticed, the drupal newsletter has taken a bit of a sabbatical lately. But before we rush into getting an issue out I thought it would be good to get a bit of a common understanding about who the target audience for it is.

Personally, when I started thinking about the newsletter, the type of person that I though it was most useful for was somebody who:
- doesn't visit drupal.org everyday
- doesn't subscribe to any drupal news feeds
- doesn't work with drupal as part of their paid employment
- uses drupal in connection with a personal hobby or voluntary project they are involved with
- maybe has just one site that are involved in
- doesn't get involved in much (if any) PHP/SQL

The sort of person who:
- has used drupal and likes what they see
- is not quite sure how to find out about all of it's potential
- wants to know more about where drupal is going as a project
- maybe hasn't contributed to the support forums

Perhaps a good way of seeing is that the newsletter audience is those people who have not got to the stage of getting involved in something like the drupal dojo group.

Or to put it another way, those on the drupal learning curve who are below the 'I kick ass' threshold, as I think that people above it will have other ways of keeping up with what is going on within drupal (or their part in it) and will want to get information more frequently than the newsletter is going to provide.

From an overall point of view, I see it as a way of engaging with people, keeping them informed and bringing them into the fold to the stage where they want to contribute by helping with documentation or support forum queries.

I couldn't agree with you

I couldn't agree with you more and I think defining our audience is a great way to sync everyone up.

I'd add a few more folks to the audience:

  • a site owner who pays someone to do the technical work on their Drupal site
  • a manager who oversees a Drupal project but isn't involved in the technical work
  • people who just can't get enough Drupal (I think we know who we are)

All that said, I think it's a good idea to have a little something for everyone - from hobbyist to uber developer, lest we constrain things too much.

I think it's really

I think it's really important we get this issue off the ground quick for the June issue, and that'll give us a lot more time to "tinker" with the process for July.

Sounds fair. I've added my

Sounds fair.

I've added my article to the wiki page.

Do we have a deadline? I seem to recall seeing one somewhere...

And if there are any gaps not yet covered for this issue, let me know.

Yeah, I think it was the

Yeah, I think it was the 26th, for it to go out the 1st. And, feel free to sign your work :-)

I think there are two major things missing:
1) An introduction, I used to write these in the old regime, but I think it's fair if everyone contributes to the "welcome" speech from now on
2) Developer drops from the past month. Basically, the big commits that happened lately. I'll see if I can get Karoly to contribute some :)
