I came across webtrees and found this post from a couple years ago: https://drupal.org/node/983016
This seems like a good idea to me - rather than build a new module from scratch, incorporate existing open-source software into Drupal's CMS. For me, the advantage is that members of my family don't need to log in separately for photo-sharing and genealogy, etc.. but can see it all on one site.

webtrees
Hi,
Thanks for your post. Are you aware of https://groups.drupal.org/node/310703#comment-982518 ?
I am no expert on Drupal or webtrees but it would seem a pity to duplicate effort.
Good luck.
I can't try that as I am not
I can't try that as I am not running Drupal 7.
Webtrees already has a user-base and, from what I've seen (which isn't much) is much more powerful than the existing Drupal genealogy modules. I also don't know much about either webtrees or drupal, but if there were a way to easily access webtrees from within drupal, I can see a lot of benefits.
Webtrees is not a CMS
I use webtrees, but only because drupal does not have similar functionality. Some things that webtrees does not have which I think are essential are:
node (person) based comments.
node (person) based subscriptions (only RSS for entire site).
I don't think that incorporating webtrees into drupal will provide either of these functions. More likely, just a shared login - such as with TNG.
Webtrees developers have specifically stated that they have no intention of making webtrees a CMS environment. I know of no open source tree software that integrates well with a CMS. The best I am aware of is werelate. The source code was released about one year ago. However, it is based on an old custom version of mediawiki and not easily upgradable to current versions. It's future is not clear and there has been no activity on the github site since the source was released. It appears abondoned.
A fully CMS integrated tree is needed. I know of no better place for it than drupal.
Webtrees single sign on
The Webtrees Drupal module provides single sign on for Drupal for Webtrees: https://www.drupal.org/project/webtrees
