The Grand Rapids Drupal Group meets on the second Monday of every month at the Community Media Center on Wealthy Street:
1110 Wealthy St SE
Grand Rapids, MI 49506

We'll be presenting a deep dive in to a specific module. This month, the module we're looking at is the Field Collection module:
https://drupal.org/project/field_collection
This allows you to group fields into their own reusable entity. While this functionality seems pretty simple, it can actually have a significant impact on how you build and maintain sites with Drupal. For example, allowing us to migrate from six content types to one, making it much easier for content editors to maintain their nodes.
We will also look at modules that integrate with field collection to further enhance the usefulness of this module family. With some help, Field Collection can make Slideshows and rotating content simple.
After the presentation, we'll regroup for some informal discussion at the Winchester:

Thanks and have a great time giving this module a try.
I won't be at our May meetup, but I will be planning a report from Drupalcon Austin for our June meetup.
Great presentation,
Great presentation, Patrick!
I learned a lot from your presentation, which was well documented, clear, and informative. Thanks much for all the work you put into showing us how useful the Field Collection module is!

I wish I could have been there! If you recall, I also did a presentation in our group last year about Field Collection and think it's a great module. I read the PDF of the presentation, and think it's a great summary. I do have one adjustment to make to it, however. It mentions that Migrate and Migrate modules don't support migration Field Collections. While Drupal to Drupal migration of Field Collections might not be supported, I can attest to the fact that the Migration module does in fact support importing into Field Collections. In fact, I'm in the middle of writing a migration right now that imports into several field collections. The issue is probably then with attempts to export Field Collection data. See these articles for more information:
I would also like to propose that I do a presentation next month on Field Collection alternatives. I first had the idea to do a presentation like this after my Field Collection presentation last year, but I think now is the great time to do it. My presentation will focus on the Inline Entity Form module, but also provide brief mentions of References dialog and Entity connect.

Thanks Sam!
Yes, that's a great idea. Can we just count on you for next time then? Perhaps between now and then you can post a preview here and create an event for the second Monday in May.
