Hi everyone.
I just joined this group and wanted to let you know about an effort of ours to create a module to fetch taxonomy terms from external sources. This would mean no more free hand tags and instead the autocomplete field keyword searches a bunch of providers through their open apis.
The providers are modular in nature, so anyone can make a new provider for the base module, which is called Yild (Yild - integrator for Linked Data).
I've already put together a proof of concept module with modular providers for Freebase, Dbpedia, Wikipedia and Finto (an ontology in Swedish, Finnish and English maintained by the Finnish National Library).
The module works by providing a widget to search from either ALL enabled providers in the same field or by searching a specific provider (such as Freebase).
Here's the link to the sandbox. I'd love it if you would test it out and perhaps comment / contribute. I've already talked to Stéphane about it, whom we met in Prague last year. We're going to come to Amsterdam as well and hopefully showcase the work there in a BoF.

A quite similar module exists
A quite similar module exists in Web taxonomy. It is based on ctools plugins for connecting to different external vocabularies (e.g., Web Taxonomy plugin for DBpedia) and links to the URIs of the external vocabularies' concepts.
Thanks for the headsup! I'll
Thanks for the headsup! I'll contact them to see whether some kind of co-operation could come in question.
