Hi everyone,
My name is Sammy Spets and i'm a Drupal contributor. Sounds like an AA intro doesn't it? :) Anyway, i've been lurking in the shadows of Drupal for just over two years and have just started contributing.
I was chatting to Kieran Lal, of CivicSpaceLabs fame, and he asked me,
02:27 <Amazon> so when are you going to throw the Drupal ecommerce conference?
You might be asking yourself two questions. Why was Kieran asking Sammy to run a conference? And why was Sammy awake at 02:27 talking to Kieran? Well, the second one is easy, Kieran is your all round good bloke trying to make Drupal part of everyone's life. The first question? I don't know the answer. :)
I thought it was a fantastic idea and i've decided to get it happening. Drupal E-commerce is a little under the weather for many people's liking, including Gordon (chief of this group :). It needs a little heaving petting of the coding kind before the end of this month. Why? Gordon is releasing the 4.7 super-duper E-commerce platform on the 1st of June.
In addition to this i'd like to run a code sprint (a la Google's Summer of Code in the US) during July and i'd like to target Drupal and Gallery, two sh*t hot open-source platforms that also need some lovin'. Ideally, we could have some workshops and other cool stuff going on.
So, i'm going to put it all out to you gals and guys. Are you interested? Will you come along? How many people can you bring along? Do you have any ideas for these events? Should I bring my plastic bucket and spade so we can build sand castles in the sandbox?
I do have access to sponsors if we get good numbers so go to town with your ideas! :) I just realised i'm addicted to Drupal. May there never be a Drupalicons Anonymous!
Let the posts flow! :)

awright so what is a codesprint anyway?
Can you please explain what a codesprint is (ie. is it a physical or virtual meeting). If physical then in Sydney?
Are you looking for specific areas to focus on in Drupal? If so I'd say e-commerce.
Define it says sime!
A code sprint is some buzzword I was told to use. I believe it's like a coding festival of some sort.
I agree that E-commerce needs some focus. We'll target that for sure.
Where are the replies from all the other 58 subscribers!? :)

a code sprint is...
Code sprint definition for meebies (ppl like me):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codefest (of which a sprint is a smaller version)
I note that a code sprint is not usually restricted to a specific area of coding. So I take back my first idea and just say that, in theory, I would/could come.
Edit: This post is turning up in E-commerce group, was that intended? I suppose you tagged it like that. I'm just thinking that this topic will be irrelevant for most people who are interested in E-commerce.
User group meet up?
I'm slowly working my way through developing a drupal website and I've managed to find the Sydney drupal group so I am wondering where and when people meet up and how many people get along. Melbourne has a meet up next week but this is 1000km away and so distance rules me out.
Forums, handbooks and drupal books are good but nothing is better than actually sitting down in a group and discussing issues, problems, techniques etc. You learn twice as much in half the time. But when and where does this happen? Or doesn't it?
Currently my ideas are bigger than my skill set. I have a more technologically gifted friend helping me and I'm slowly learning but I want to be able to work with drupal on my own with confidence.
If there is a group meet up in the near future where do I find out about it? Do I just keep periodically checking this page?
thanks
gavin

Interest++
Can we still revive your project?
I am interested in the "workshops" and the "sponsors". Please explain more.
And where will the events be?
John
Was doing social distancing before it was cool.
Same lines as that in Australia forum
The workshop stuff is very much in the same vein as that which we've since been discussing in your post to the Australia forum.
I'm merely speculating on the sponsorship stuff. I have a contact that may work in our favour.
Really keen on showing Drupal to the whole of Australia to start them moving away from the crappy proprietary solutions they are currently stuck with.
