In Case of Rain:

If it rains, we'll postpone the walk to March based on the blackout dates in the comments.

===========

When and Where:

Date: Saturday February 21st
Time: 1pm to whenever
Place: Wilder Ranch (ocean side)

Let's meet at the parking lot at 1pm and head out for the walk no later than 1:10. If you're late, just follow the path to the ocean (past the train tracks) and you might catch up with us. Or, call one of us to see where we're at. We can exchange some numbers next Tuesday at SCDUG for those who are going.

===========

Parking at Wilder:

Note: It is $10 to park in the parking lot unless you have a Poppy pass ($120/year?) so you are encouraged to carpool.

You can ride a bike along a bike path from the Westside to Wilder but I don't know how long it takes.

There is "free parking" along Highway 1 if you can scramble down a steep (short) hill and deal with some barbed wire or climb over a short fence. I used to park there before kids but I don't risk it anymore (due to Highway 1 traffic rather than the hill/fence).

===========

Post Walk:

For those who are interested, there are many good restaurants on Mission / Highway 1 we can hit afterwards. Some ideas:

Omei
Sabieng
Taqueria Vallerta

Original Post:

We were thinking a weekend hike/walk with the Santa Cruz Drupal crowd would be fun. Friends and families welcome as well as Silicon Valley / Bay Area Drupalers. I put down a date but that is just a placeholder for now. If you are interested in a hike/walk, please add a comment with:

1) weekends between now and April 1st that you CANNOT make a hike/walk

2) top 3 places you would prefer walking/hiking

3) if you have any mobility restrictions (that will help us narrow down where to go)

I think we should shoot for something that isn't super strenuous but gives us some exercise and is scenic. Some places we go are:

Henry Cowell - Pipeline Trail area / down to river / up hill is huff and puff part way
Henry Cowell - Fall Creek (some moderately steep hills part of the way up)
Wilder - up to overlook (some moderately steep hills part of the way up)
Wilder - to the beaches - very mellow / no hill
Pogonip - not too much huff and puff
Nisene Marks - haven't done in awhile but I remember it being pretty mellow if you don't go to far
UCSC - can be huff and puff depending on the location

Comments

Love to join in on this

Love to join in on this hike/walk.
I do need to keep the huff and puff to a minimum and should limit my time to an hour for health reasons, so I might turn around early if others want a longer or more strenuous excursion.

My top 3 choices (in no special order) from above are:
-- Wilder - to the beaches - very mellow / no hill
-- Henry Cowell - Fall Creek (some moderately steep hills part of the way up)
-- Nisene Marks - haven't done in awhile but I remember it being pretty mellow if you don't go to far <-- Julia's note on Nisene: can recommend a creek-based trail offshoot near the kiosk for fun and mellow-ness

I can NOT make these weekend dates:

Sun Jan 18
Sun Feb 8
Sun Mar 8
Sat/Sun Mar 14,15
Sat/Sun Mar 21,22

Dates subject to change as usual :)

Thanks for organizing this! I can't make:
- Sat/Sun Jan 17/18
- Sat/Sun Jan 31/Feb 1

I'd be thrilled with anything that is either along a beach, or has ocean views, or is through redwoods.

My blackout dates

Kristen Pol's picture

I can't do weekend of Feb 7th/8th. I might want to get some vitamin D so my top picks right now are:

  • Wilder (beach side is fine)
  • Pogonip
  • UCSC

I like Henry Cowell and Nisene Marks but there is no sun! That said, I'm not opposed to a wooded hike/walk.

I would like to join

For health concerns, I would be down to go to Wilder, Henry Cowell, and I also have distance concerns also.

Saturdays have been booked so far, but it really depends on what happens at the radio station for the show I have been producing video. Saturday mornings on the second Saturday are also booked with the Web Dev Group at NextSpace.

Any of the suggestions are fine by me

I will, however, be away 1/30-2/1 and 2/7-8.

Love to hike with the Drupalers!

Hi, I'm new to the group. I'd also like to suggest Saratoga Gap, as it has amazing views of both the ocean and the bay, is mostly sunny and rolling hills so everyone should be able to hack it.

I'm away from 1/25 - 2/12.

Tentative date = February 21st or 22nd

Kristen Pol's picture

For now, let's pencil in February 21st or 22nd. That seems to work with everyone's blackout dates above. If it ends up raining, we can have a backup date in March.

Based on mobility and access, I think that the Wilder Ranch walk along the cliffs would be a good fit since it's pretty flat and mellow and people can easily turn back at any point and not feel "by themselves" like you might in the woods. Certainly up for argument though. ;)

For those who want to hang out and chat on the beach, there are some ways down to some beaches but they can be an issue getting to if you are worried about slipping. The trails down are a bit overgrown and pitted. I've never slipped but you will need to assess if you feel comfortable getting down/up.

For those who want more activity, the trail is long so you can simply "keep going". Or, more walking can be had on the non-cliff side of Wilder... for example, we can go see the chickens and horses after the beach. My kids like climbing the trees next to the Wilder buildings.

Hi everyone... Is this hike happening?

Cheers, Kurt

yes!

I just checked the weather report and there might be rain Saturday night but the afternoon looks clear. See you there! If you aren't part of the regular SCDUG, you might want to wear a Drupal shirt so people "see" you. I'll try to wear one myself.

Updated

Missing the hike

juliavdw's picture

Hi all, it turns out that today is my last chance to see a friend before she leaves to travel the world. I will be sorry to miss the hike today but hope we can do this again sometime.

happy hiking,
–Julia v.

This is a short hike

The last link I sent led someone to believe this is a long hike. It's not. You can go longer if you want though.
