Advantages of using Drupal in HE

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hello Drupal-ers and greestings from the Medical School of the University of Dundee,

I used Drupal in the past as a website platform, basically, and we are now pioneering it as an online community platform for the Medical School for staff and students.

I would like to explore the advantages that Drupal can bring to the research community in HE, in addition to the website features. The Medical School website has been developed in Drupal, but Wordpress could have done the same function for just posting and updating content.

I would like to prove that Drupal can do more done that by helping to create an online community.

Anybody has explored the advantages of using Drupal in HE, in particular to engage research and disseminate bench marking practices?

Thank you very much for your advice.

Best regards,
Mari Cruz

Hello there,

Not sure if my experiences would be of value, but here are some case studies to look into:

I am a UK HE technologist and make heavy use of drupal as a website platform. I work with Falmouth University and I know that their Academy of Innovation and Research was previously heavily invested in drupal, amongst other things using it to create a social platform to engage their researchers. I also know that they have moved away from this approach, so their reasons may be of interest. I was also involved in a project to create an arts based research repository using drupal, which I would consider an interesting failiure and would be happy to discuss.

One big example is Penn State support a very high profile drupal publishing platform that I believe is open to all their academics and researchers.

Recently noticed that Surrey University are making use of Drupal to create a 'portfolio of sites and apps' as referenced in this job adertisement. Also stumbled on their (drupal+) code/style guide, which looks really well considered.

Hope some of this is of help

Thank you very much for the

Thank you very much for the feedback. I noticed that Harvard also uses Drupal although it is the distribution that they have created.
We are going ahead with Drupal at the Medical School but only for undergraduate teaching
