Outlining the features of OpenMusic

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Welcome everybody!
In this first post and the subsequent ones I would like to provide an outline for the basic features of the OpenMusic network, the ones that I already have in mind and the ones that are yet to come. Each feature will be briefly summarized here while all discussion will be taking place in feature specific posts.
Thank you for your interest!

a network of communities

chrisroditis's picture

First and foremost the openmusic network should consist of many independent social communities build upon the openmusic installation profile. What defines OpenMusic as a network is a common set of functionality, primarily distributed authentication, content aggregation and a subset of features relative to music distribution and promotion. These are the three main factors that identify an openmusic social community. Building from the ground up, I would like to start discussing the third factor, music distribution and promotion, but before we get to that let's talk about ultra basic features such as user registration and profile information.

A healthy disregard for the impossible.

Profiles for multiple user types?

gusaus's picture

Correct me if I'm wrong. Are you planning on creating a separate profile for each type of user (such as band, promoter, fan, manager, etc.). If so, that may be similar to what I was thinking here - http://groups.drupal.org/node/4013#comment-11927. Regardless, I'm curious to hear more details and see what we can work on.

Also - would it make sense to cross-post over to the arts/music and other related groups?

Thank you Gus for

Thank you Gus for participating, I apologize for being so late to answer back, it's almost 45 degrees Celsius here in Greece and vacation was my only option ;) I'll be leaving again tomorrow (I am taking a break between vacations right now lol!), but I'll be using my mobile internet to keep me updated with what's going on here.

To answer your first question, no, I am planning on a single installation profile. Upon thinking about creating slightly different flavors of that main installation profile, the similarities to the needs of music business related personas are so many that it would not quite justify the burden of creating and maintaining different install profiles. Instead, one Drupal installation that were to take care of dividing all of these needs for each user type by using a common data structure for each type ( as I will later suggest, make an organic group out of each artist/band ), would provide an easier to maintain and more complete solution for a music social community (at least I hope so)

I've been trying to break down the aspects of OpenMusic, and in the posts that will follow, each post will be talking about each of these aspects. Hopefully that will help discussion and will clear things up a bit, mostly in my head -lol!

Cross posting in related groups (arts/music especially) is a must, we need all the help we can get for this monster to work right. I'll try to fill this group with stuff to talk about first and then will post summaries to other groups.

Please bear with me until I

Please bear with me until I fill in all the following posts with explanations, so that you get a clearer picture of what OpenMusic is about. It's just that I am between trips and I'm trying to....errr, wash my clothes .That takes too much time -lol

PS: it's strange to be seeing my face post after post in the groups' main page, it makes me blush.
PS2: Sorry for the notifications, can't turn them off!

Just updated two posts:

Just updated two posts: OpenMusic: user registration & profile information - added "Nodeprofile content types" and wrote some basic info forOpenMusic: connecting music artists and fans. I am trying to fill the rest of the posts, but Santorini is one of the best places I have ever been in my entire life, I have to enjoy it while it lasts!

It's been a while, but I

chrisroditis's picture

It's been a while, but I want you to know I am ceaselessly working on OpenMusic since the day I returned from vacation. Unfortunately I pushed updating this group's page lower in my priorities list, my main concern is to be able to propose a list of modules that will work for what I am suggesting in these pages, and not the other way around!
I am slowly building a primitive Openmusic site in my sandbox, hopefully once I get some features ready I'll provide you with an nice peek inside my brain, I think that is the easiest way to explain some basic ideas. Sometimes I get messy trying to write words to speak for my mind since English is not my native language, I hope you can bear with me!

Hi Christopher, I'm planning

yeeloon's picture

Hi Christopher,

I'm planning to develop a social network (not to the full scale as myspace, facebook, bebo) as well, but something of consisting of basic features to start off with. I will update as I get along on pushing the site.

Also, I want to ask if you are opening your site openmusic.gr to public testing? As I can remember, that the placeholder on your site has been up there for quite sometime...

Cheers,
yeeloon

Hello Yeeloon, unfortunately

chrisroditis's picture

Hello Yeeloon,
unfortunately not yet, I am at a sea of countless combinations regarding modules that I need to use (yet_). I've been moving really slow trying to gues which is the best module long term to use for each functionality. The good thing is I've done some patches to update older modules, some bug and compatibility reporting, I've been in motion generally speaking but not to a point where I think it's necessary to bring openmusic to public testing. My greatest dilemma is regarding the best profile solution, that will be supported in Drupal 6 and works well in Drupal 5.
So I need some more time friend, however I'd be glad to help in anyway I can with your project.

Does anyone have the time or inclination to help us build a music and quicktime film module in a gated forum for students.. .to post original work on topics of urgent social/cultural nature. Rather than a "talent forum" this is a forum for students in a "global creativity/music appreciation class" to try their own hands at "making" music/films, etc. --- on topics generally avoided by schools. We have the general forum built... but need to create the music/media option.

From here: we hope to do a more expanded version for professional artists, media personnel, and educators --- to address key social topics of concern and receive both "publication credit" -- and sell their works in compilations with writers, etc. (and interdisciplinary publication of art, articles, etc.)

Goal: change the method of "learning" to a creative base... and the "nature of Publication" to include 'artists'/musicians
