Composer is the current standard for managing PHP project dependencies. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use it, along with other open source tools, to manage and deploy Drupal websites in a streamlined fashion. You'll learn how to keep the number of files in your project's repository to a minimum, avoiding the need to commit Drupal core and contributed projects with your codebase. You'll learn how to track changes to your site's configuration using version control and prevent configuration from being changed on a live site.

To participate, you should have a functioning local development environment (web server, database server, and PHP) and be comfortable with the following:

  • Executing commands in a terminal window
  • The basics of version control with Git
  • The basics of working with Drush and/or Drupal Console
  • Creating a local database

Additionally, it will be very useful to have a full-featured integrated development environment (IDE), such as PHPStorm, SublimeText, Eclipse, NetBeans, etc.

Please sign up if you plan to attend, since space is limited.

If you're curious about how to use Composer to manage your project dependencies—including Drupal modules, themes, and profiles—sign up for the Drupal 8 Site Management and Deployment Workshop this Saturday. We will go step-by-step through the process of defining dependencies in Composer and using the resulting configuration file to generate the codebase for a site, while keeping the number of committed files to a minimum.
