Hey Drupal peeps--
I've got a question for you...what is with the Related Content module??? Is the only way to theme it through the php? To use it you have to set up a view, but then it doesn't actually use the fields from that view, it seems to have a default view of its own that's overriding that (which I can only guess is coming from the php, based on what's in the Read me. Otherwise it does exactly what I'm looking for, but I need to be able to make it show the related content as only the titles of the related nodes, as links in a list. Preferably as a block.
Many thanks!

Do you mean?
http://drupal.org/project/related_content -- it seems complicated. And it's brand new. And not release? Link to the module, damn it!
I use: http://drupal.org/project/similar -- it's much simpler. And only does titles. See http://bmannconsulting.com for an example.

sorry, i didn't realize it was that new, someone else found it and i just installed it... (not that that's an excuse, my bad!)
i'll check out that other one.... (although i can't see where you've used it on your site)

relatedlinks
the relatedlinks module is very good as well.
Ah
Yes, that one is interesting. It duplicates some functionality of the links bundle (which I have had high hopes for in the past, and still want to see blossom....). Ideally, we'd be able to merge most of these modules. A "links" field and some views seem the ticket here....
i don't know if the related
i don't know if the related links module will do enough, but i'll check that out and the one boris suggested next week--if i find anything or figure out anything that seems really helpful, i'll be sure to post it here!
thanks for all the suggestions!

FYI--forgot to update on this ages ago, but the related links module ended up working great!
Featured Content Module
This is an old thread but you can also check out the featured content module for easily creating lots of different kinds of related content blocks:
