"Building the Open Web: The technical, financial, and social challenges facing us as communities, web professionals, and open source advocates."

Come join with us on October 13th, 2018 for a day of learning, sharing, and collaboration across a variety of Twin Cities Open Source communities. As advocates/users of Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla, BackdropCMS, many Javascript frameworks, or any of the many other FLOSS CMSs available, it’s easy to find ourselves on islands of our own making with others who share our technological choices. It’s easy to lose track of what is happening on all the other little islands around us.

Listen to a TEN7 podcast with event organizers Wilbur Ince and Tim Erickson: Episode 040: Twin Cities Open Source CMS Unconference

This cross platform/technology learning event is designed to help us get off our islands and:

1) Compare and contrast the variety of open source tools and platforms and how to choose the best option for our projects

2) Share information and lessons learned on topics of shared concern such as:

  • Web accessibility
  • Open source tools for non-profits
  • Cross community collaboration
  • Data privacy
  • Cross platform tools and libraries
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • How to support other open source communities that build the tools we use
  • Devops, workflows, and hosting
  • Ethical practices for web developers and site owners
  • Open data
  • Building or supporting open source communities
  • Making a living with open source tools
  • Being human (and a developer)
  • How to start and maintain an open source project

3) Discuss the future of our respective FLOSS communities, the challenges we face, and how we might better collaborate

4) Make new connections with folks from other communities and who have complementary skills

What is an unconference?

"An unconference is a participant-driven event where the attendees create the agenda, discussion topics, and workshops. The informal and flexible program allows participants to suggest topics of their own interest and choose sessions accordingly."

Looking for a few more participants!

It's been almost 4 years since we had the Twin Cities Drupal Open House or as some people called it TCD'OH. Some folks in the local community are still calling this event the best Drupal event they ever attended.

This Saturday, we're having the Twin Cities Open Source CMS Unconference. It will be like TCD'OH, but we're opening the circle to involve our compatriots in other open source CMS communities such as Joomla, WordPress, BackdropCMS, and all the various Javascript tools and frameworks out there.

Early registration is going "ok." But, we need a last minute push to get a few more people signed up. Here is how you can help:

1) Register Today!

2) Tell your co-workers about it!

3) Like, share, and/or comment on our Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2110205335908152/

4) Share one of our tweets. Add your own comments or post your own tweet.

5) Follow our Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/TCOSCMS

6) Post a comment here in this Groups.Drupal.Org thread!

7) Share this on any local tech Slack channels or comment on the topic if someone else has already posted it. Add your own endorsement!

8) Help us get the word out at the University of Minnesota. We must have a few friends there....

9) Hand make a large banner and stand on an I-94 bridge for a few hours to promote the event. (If this one seems like too much, just go back and do something in the range of #1-8).

Update

stpaultim's picture

For those following along at home, here is a quick update.

We have about 30 folks registered for the Twin Cities Open Source Unconference on Saturday. We have 2 FREE tickets remaining and 11 tickets available for $13.13. If you can't stay all day, it's ok to come for part of the day.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/twin-cities-open-source-cms-unconference-ti...

As an unconference, we won't actually create our schedule for the day until Saturday morning, based upon who is in attendance and what they want to talk about. We will facilitate this process using a high tech process based upon post-it notes and a large grid. However, we have asked participants to suggest some topics in advance, if you'd like to take a peek:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tyQwBmsKdHx4POJ5sW_vYNoUGNRgXCZ6...

We have confirmed participants from Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, and BackdropCMS communities.

I'm brining board games for anyone who wants to hang around at the end of the day (or anyone who just want to stop by afterward to join us for games and hear about how things went).

BIG shout-out to Tim and Wylbur - this was a very nice way to exchange ideas and learn from members of other open source communities. I hope you'll do this again.
