Start:
2018-12-13 10:00 - 12:00 America/Los_Angeles
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

We hope you can join us for the next daytime meeting of the Spokane Drupal User Group!

When
Thursday, December 13, 2018, 10 AM to noon
We usually meet on a Thursday morning at a library out in the Spokane Valley area. Log in and join the Spokane Drupal User Group (see sidebar on https://groups.drupal.org/spokane-wa ) to be notified of future meetings, events, and discussions (typically just a few email messages per month).
Where
Spokane County Library - Argonne branch, 4322 N Argonne Rd, Millwood. We are currently meeting in the small conference room at the library. From the hallway, go into the library proper, past the checkout/information desk, take a right and you'll see the room on the right. We sometimes meet at the Spokane Valley branch, but this time we're at Argonne due to meeting room availability.
To be reminded, sign up!
To receive an email reminder closer to the date of the meeting, log in and click the "Sign up" button; log in and click "Cancel signup" at a later time if your schedule changes and you can no longer come. There's no obligation to come if you sign up (but we hope you will!). There's also no obligation to sign up in order to come (it's up to you if you want a reminder or not). However, the meeting could be canceled if the organizer isn't sure anyone is coming.
What
We spend two hours in a question and answer format, with the participants around a table, and a laptop with a projector. Come with questions about a project you're working on, something you've learned that you'd like to share with others, a desire to improve Drupal in some way (documentation, programming, design, marketing etc.), or a desire to help others with their projects and questions. Or just come and listen and observe.
Who
Everyone is welcome -- the only prerequisite is having some interest in Drupal. This group is usually 5-10 friendly people, with experience levels ranging from novice to expert, so you'll fit right in. Because of the size of the group, you will have time to share something you've learned, or get your questions answered, or both!
Need a ride?
If transportation is keeping you from attending, please log in and post a comment here. Our usual attendees come from all around the area: downtown Spokane, Mead, Hayden, Spokane Valley, Post Falls, etc. So, we can probably find someone to give you a ride without going too much out of their way.

Comments

Note: December, Argonne!

Please note that this meeting is in December. I haven't set up a meeting for November (I'm not available), but if you'd like to have one on November 15, please post a comment here. If there is enough interest, Shawn can probably host a meeting on that date. Meanwhile, I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving, and I'll see you in December!

Also note we're back at the Argonne library branch for this meeting. That's the room that was available for the 13th of December.

Remind me to talk about...

3 of our group members were at BADCamp in Berkeley CA in October. Hopefully we can have a recap of things we learned about. Just so I don't forget between now and then, I would want to mention:
- Webform module 8.x and attaching forms to things
- DD&I

I would be happy to host the meeting...

We can cover anything additional from web marketing, video production, graphic design, eCommerce, etc. Let me know. Please post a recommended date if you have interest in a November meeting.

I am planning on being there

What we talked about at the meeting yesterday:

  • Upcoming Events:
    - DrupalCon - Seattle - April 8-12, 2019 - https://events.drupal.org/seattle2019 -- Tickets are about $500 and up -- early bird discount ends Oct 31. You can attend the Friday "sprint" (work) day for free. Also, after DrupalCon you can watch the sessions on YouTube for free (at least, that's been true in the past).
    - Pacific Northwest Drupal Summit - Seattle - not until 2020!
    - There is a calendar for other Drupal events:
    https://groups.drupal.org/events
  • BADCamp 2018 report -- Jennifer, Shawn, and Diane were there:
    - Videos of presentations should be up on https://2018.badcamp.org/
    - Browse the sessions -- many were for newbies
    - New Drupal 8 version of WebForm module is awesome! New feature: make a web form and attach it to all the items of a content type, for something like a Feedback form. When submitted, you can tell where the submission came from. (Jennifer and Shawn saw this)
    - Using Amazon Web Services to expand site capacity on demand (Shawn saw this)
    - Drupal Diversity and Inclusion group is working on improving diversity in the Drupal project -- see https://www.drupaldiversity.com/
    - Layouts for Drupal 8 -- User interface for laying out web pages for Drupal, for both mobile and desktop
  • Accessibility
    - https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/ -- Accessibility standards
    - There are many accessibility testing tools. If your project requires you to satisfy some accessibility guidelines, get your client/supervisor/project manager to specify which tool the site needs to pass in! They are not all the same.
  • REST and JSON:
    - Drupalize.me courses are pretty good in this area, but a bit disjointed at times (for instance, you might get a lesson on Security that is kind of independent of the rest of the things you're looking at)
    - APIs for requesting/updating data from/to a Drupal database
    - Drupal 8 JSON API, John says, is way better than the Drupal 7 REST API. Has filters you can use to limit traffic between JavaScript and the server
  • Drupal 8 has a new capability to do a demo site from the command line with only PHP:
    https://www.drupal.org/docs/official_docs/en/_evaluator_guide.html
  • Dries posted a blog yesterday about Drupal 9 plans:
