Yesterday, Ted Bowman (Acquia), David Snopek (Panopoly distro maintainer) and I (core accessibility maintainer) met with the Web Access team at UC Berkeley for a detailed accessibility review of the new Layout Builder module in Drupal 8 core.
We looked in detail at various prototypes - some were pen-and-paper concepts, others were working code. In particular we discussed various ways to re-order blocks without a pointer device. This is the biggest single challenge, how to help users with lots of different input devices without over-complicating the UI.
The feedback from the sessions is being written up, and will be added to relevant core issues soon. Meanwhile I've started a big issue summary update, so the main plan reflects the feedback we received. Overall, the session was a very useful outside review, providing the kind of accessible design validation we sorely needed. I'm still reflecting on what we learned, but we are much closer to a comprehensive plan.
Thanks to the Web Access team at UC Berkeley for reaching out to help with this project - Caroline Boyden, Lucy Greco, and Anna Gazdowicz.
The main accessiblity plan for Layout Builder module is at Form a comprehensive plan for accessibility of Layout Builder.
