Event type:
User group meeting

We hope you can join us for the next daytime meeting of the Spokane Web Technology Group! We are currently meeting every two weeks online.

Note: We decided at a June meeting to change the name of our group from Spokane Daytime Drupal Group to Spokane Web Technology Group, to reflect our interest in and willingness to discuss web technology topics that are unrelated to Drupal if they come up.

When
Thursday, August 20, 2020, 10 AM to noon
[This meeting was scheduled for August 6, but we did not have a quorum of people show up, so it is rescheduled for August 20]
Where
Due to the libraries being closed, this meeting will be held online in a Google Hangout (link will be posted 10-15 minutes before the meeting -- check back).
To be reminded, sign up!
To receive an email reminder closer to the date of the meeting, log in and click the "Sign up" button; log in and click "Cancel signup" at a later time if your schedule changes and you can no longer come. There's no obligation to come if you sign up (but we hope you will!). There's also no obligation to sign up in order to come (it's up to you if you want a reminder or not).
What
We spend up to two hours in a question and answer format, with the participants in Google Hangouts, where they can share their screens, talk, etc. Most participants do not turn on video on for the meeting. Come with questions about a project you're working on, something you've learned that you'd like to share with others, a desire to improve Drupal in some way (documentation, programming, design, marketing etc.), or a desire to help others with their projects and questions. Or just come and listen and observe.
Who
Everyone is welcome -- the only prerequisite is having some interest in Drupal or other web technology. This group is usually 5-10 friendly people, with experience levels ranging from novice to expert, so you'll fit right in. Because of the size of the group, you will have time to share something you've learned, or get your questions answered, or both!

We plan to devote some of the meeting to the basics of Search Engine Optimization. People who want to can create an account on both the Google and Bing search and webmaster tools sites before the next meeting:

No quorum...

Only Shawn and I showed up to the meeting today, so as of 10:10, we are cancelling and I will edit this meeting notice to say we are meeting in 2 weeks on August 20.

I hope everyone is out enjoying the cool weather today!

Please sign up if you are coming!!

Reminder: We have a meeting scheduled for this Thursday, 20 August.

Two weeks ago we canceled the meeting because only Shawn and I showed up... So, I am requesting that if you plan to come, please click the "Sign up" button (or add a comment here) sometime before Wednesday morning. If there are not at least 3 people who've indicated they are coming by Wednesday, I will cancel this meeting and reschedule for September 3.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer!

Attending on the 20th

Hi, My name is Chrys. I've never attended either in-person or on-line, but I've always wanted to. I live in Tumtum and seldom come to town, but I'm on-line all the time, so, if there will be a meeting on the 20th, I'd like to attend. Link?

Hi! Assuming the meeting has enough attending to hold it, we will see link info in this discussion about 15 minutes before when a Google Hangouts meeting is scheduled.

Hope to see you there!

Link will be posted 10-15 minutes before meeting

I will set up a Google Hangout about 10-15 minutes before the meeting and post a link. Looking forward to meeting you (virtually)!

Meeting notes

Here's what we discussed today -- and welcome Chrys, a first-time attendee!

  • Next meeting in two weeks! I'll schedule it after I post this.
  • Events:
    - Events may be happening online, so you could meet people from all over the world -- check https://groups.drupal.org/events?type%5B%5D=regional for events
  • Matt asked about doing a security audit of a site, to verify that pages are locked down correctly. We came up with an idea of crawling the site using wget -- see:
    https://www.drupal.org/node/27882

He also wanted to be able to audit what someone who made their own account on the site could see. We came up with an idea: on a local copy of the site, grant the same permissions to "anonymous" users as authenticated users currently have, and then do the same wget audit.

  • Matt shared that there was a problem of integration between the contributed Groups module and the contributed Views Bulk Operations module. Someone created an issue in the Groups module, which many people chimed in with "Me too!" on, and then it was eventually fixed in the VBO module -- the community at work!
  • Matt asked about how he could get an email when someone creates a new user account. We suggested he could use the Rules or Business Rules module. He has Business Rules on the site, and we found that it didn't have a trigger for "someone creates an account" to respond to. But it did have "someone creates an entity" and you could have it respond to creating a User entity, so that should work.
  • Chrys (welcome Chrys!!) asked about making local copies of development sites. Diane and Shawn both swear by Cloudways. It's super helpful for making development clones of sites. They also do daily backups. You get a command line and FTP.

If you want to make a local site on your own computer, here are some documentaiton pages:

    a) https://www.drupal.org/docs/official_docs/en/_local_development_guide.html
How to do it using "Docker" -- this page is up-to-date.

    b) https://www.drupal.org/docs/develop/local-server-setup
More alternatives for how to do it, but may not be up-to-date.
