User group meeting

We hope you can join us for the next daytime meeting of the Spokane Web Technology Group [formerly: Spokane Daytime Drupal Group]! We are currently meeting every two weeks online.

When
Thursday, October 1, 2020, 10 AM to noon
Where
Due to the pandemic, this meeting will be held online in a Google Hangout (link will be posted 10-15 minutes before the meeting -- check back).
To be reminded, sign up!
To receive an email reminder closer to the date of the meeting, log in and click the "Sign up" button; log in and click "Cancel signup" at a later time if your schedule changes and you can no longer come. There's no obligation to come if you sign up (but we hope you will!). There's also no obligation to sign up in order to come (it's up to you if you want a reminder or not).
What
We spend up to two hours in a question and answer format, with the participants in Google Hangouts, where they can share their screens, talk, etc. Most participants do not turn on video on for the meeting. Come with questions about a project you're working on, something you've learned that you'd like to share with others, a desire to improve Drupal in some way (documentation, programming, design, marketing etc.), or a desire to help others with their projects and questions. Or just come and listen and observe.
Who
Everyone is welcome -- the only prerequisite is having some interest in Drupal or other web technology. This group is usually 5-10 friendly people, with experience levels ranging from novice to expert, so you'll fit right in. Because of the size of the group, you will have time to share something you've learned, or get your questions answered, or both!

BADCamp!

I wanted everyone to know that the Bay Area Drupal Camp (better know as BADCamp) is going to be online this year, October 14-17. It looks like Wed/Thu are training and summits, and Fri/Sat are sessions. They also need volunteers to help out online. See
https://2020.badcamp.org/
for more information.

Meeting notes

Here is what we talked about at today's meeting:

  • Next meeting in two weeks! I'll schedule it after I post this.
  • Events:
    - BADCamp will be October 14-17 online: https://2020.badcamp.org/
    - DrupalCon Europe will be December 8-11 online: https://events.drupal.org/europe2020
    - Other regional events are happening online, so you could meet people from all over the world -- check https://groups.drupal.org/events?type%5B%5D=regional for events
  • We talked about maybe, as a group, getting on Discord or DrupalChat, so we can do voice chat as well as hold our meetings there. Jennifer will investigate and report back.
  • Matt asked about CSS "sprites". He's using a modal dialog (using Drupal Core functionality) and the close button is disappearing. The solution is supposed to be to use a "sprite" image that contains a bunch of icons in it, and point to the one you need.
    - Diane suggested making a stand-alone image rather than a sprite, if the sprite is a problem.
    - Getting the sprite image off the Internet could also be a problem.
    - We found some tutorials on sprites in general to understand how to use them and in particular what the coordinates mean:
    https://www.tutorialrepublic.com/css-tutorial/css-sprites.php
    https://www.w3schools.com/Css/css_image_sprites.asp
    https://css-tricks.com/css-sprites/
  • Lisa had a question about Drupal 8, wants to set up Fivestar. It turned out she needed to go to Manage Fields for the content type, and add a new field of type Fivestar. Then go to Manage Display and drag the field to the desired position.

Discord

One of the things we talked about today was possibly using Discord for online text chat and/or voice/video/screen share meetings. Let's try it out!

Here's an invite:
https://discord.gg/N4UEEtV

If this link has expired by the time you see this message, send me a message by using my contact form on this site (click through to my user profile and click the Contact link) and I'll send you a new invite. (I'll also try to refresh the link periodically until some more people get on Discord.)

If you follow the invite link, you will be asked to set up a free Discord account if you don't already have one, and then you can log in to Discord and join the server. On the server, there is currently a "general" voice chat channel and a "General" voice/video chat channel. Anyone can make more channels as well, if we find we want to have channels for particular topics.

See you there!
