hi there. am new to drupal but think it's pretty cool, probably better than joomla for what i have in mind.
am thinking of starting something sort of like projectopus.com, but in a different field, and focused around a single venue and what goes on there, but with coverage of the artists who float through there. what would be a good distribution to start from? drupal + civicspace? is there a better venue management solution?

Hmmm...let's see. For a venue, I would guess the most important things would be events (event.module), announcements (simplenews.module), and possibly images (image.module) and audio clips (audio.module). Then for the artist bios you could just use the built in story module or page module. I think with a really nice theme, and free tagging/taxonomy that's all you'd really need to have a pretty powerful venue site that would let people know what is going on with the venue and possibly provide some mechanisms for interaction with patrons of the venue (ask people who'd they like to see play, feedback after a show, forum discussions).
Civicspace will take care of a lot of the headaches of installation but you will probably still need to fiddle around with configuration settings and getting a really good theme (the most important part!). But if you have semi-decent knowledge of computers then you'll have more control if you install Drupal first and then install the modules you want.

Pre-hosted
Another option if it is within your budget would be to look into a pre-hosted Drupal solution by Bryght (backstage.bryght.com). They'll take care of installation, upgrading, maintenance of Drupal and all you do is turn on the modules you want (not all Drupal modules are supported however) and create a nice theme. Pretty sweet, but will run you around $40/month.
Pretty much what I'm doing as well.
I'm in the process of doing something very similar for a venue, and what I'm doing is almost exactly what is outlined above. We're making a lot of use of the views and cck modules as well. Drupal or Civicspace are a very good match for these needs.
