As you may have already noticed, I'm working on a soc project, which is quite related to this topic:
Node Profile Module and CCK
The difference is, that I'll concentrate on using it with the CCK. However, I'll write code as much independend of the CCK as easily possible, so that my work might be with a custom built node type, too.
I've posted an implementation proposal here. Please post your comments and or suggestions - let me know what you think of it.

Nice you chime in here. Is there anything you think we "the group" should work on, or should leave for a while? It would be great when you finish your work, and the profiles_as_nodes gets t a finish, we can click both projects into eachother, like a puzzle and offer a great, woking solution, instead of two solutions that do similar work.

Yeah, one great working solution is the goal, hopefully we can achieve that.
I'm interested in your feedback and tips as I want to create a flexible solution, which is able to satisfy people's requirements. I see no reason that you leave for a while. Instead I would just suggest that we are working together, whenever possible.

i've already created a drupal project for it.. -> http://drupal.org/node/68360
so all code 'll be in cvs, however I've not done any code yet.
