Fort Bend Women's Center Barn Raising Event!

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hey all,
Just writing to formally announce the FBWC buildathon. We've finally got a date of July 17th nailed down and will be working out of Sugar Land Town Square. We're hoping to make this a high profile event and draw a lot of attention. This should really give us some bragging rights as a DUG.

The Fort Bend Women's Center is thrilled to have us work with them on the development of their new site. We've met with them once to get the broad strokes project scope that you see as a wiki posted below. The new website will be designed, developed and launched in one day, the day of the event. There will be planning meetings, with use cases and wireframes - perhaps even site mockups prepared before the event but the bulk of the site development will occur on July 17th.

We're in the process of creating a basecamp project and hope that you will send me an email (jason@emunications.com) to request access. It would be a big help if folks could choose a particular part of the site that they would be interested in contributing to and make it their own. Please do this as soon as possible so that you can do whatever preparation you might need to do for the day of the event. Please also update the basecamp site with any relevant information and questions that will help us prepare for the big event. Feel free to post here as well, I'll check in regularly and answer any questions I find. Note that the scope listed on the wiki contains wishlist items in addition to anticipated functionality. What makes it in is dependent largely upon what we can commit to and accomplish the day of.

Affordable Drupal Webmaster Services

haikunick's picture

I'm looking for a Houston web design developer/group to handle webmaster services for a high school drupal 6.1x web site. Any recommendations for a responsive company or designer would be appreciated. The school administration wants to have a person to rely upon to fix problems, update modules, create regular backups, and develop new features e.g. alumni pages for the web site.

Please let me know of where to inquire.

Many thanks,
Nick Alvarado

Nick, we are just the company you are looking for. eMUNICATIONS is a small company of 6 and are extremely proficient in Drupal. We can design, theme, configure and write custom modules for your Drupal install. Call me at 281-491-1748 so we can discuss your needs.

This should really be its own

This should really be its own thread, and added as a job, not a comment. In the right sidebar you should see options for posting jobs, events, and discussions. Please post using the appropriate type. Helps keep things organized a bit.

Thanks.

Time to get involved!

Silicon.Valet's picture

I'd really like to hear from folks on whether or not they'll be joining the event. The more people we get there, the more likely the event will be a huge success.

If you're intimidated by the scope of the project, keep in mind that we do sites like these on this kind of timeline all the time in our shop. The point is for us to be working together and learning from each other. By owning a small part of the site, you can make sure that it's as polished as it can be.

If you are concerned that you will not be able to contribute meaningfully to the structure of the site, there is still plenty that you can do! We need help getting the content in there and making it look fantastic. We need training for FBWC in the usage of the site and we need volunteers to deliver presentations on the Drupal community.

Please don't be shy, let's get this ball rolling!

I am game. Happy to come out for it-- thanks for setting it up.

San Antonio can join via Skype?

Charlotte-Anne's picture

A bunch of us over here at the San Antonio Drupal Users Group would like to pitch in, if we can do it via Skype video and avoid the drive.
Are y'all game?
We have space with a good connection and big screen on the wall, which would let us join the conversation.
Are you folks able to/inclined to set up a Skype video connection back to us?
Thanks!

More the merrier!

Silicon.Valet's picture

That sounds like a blast! We'll have to do some talking beforehand so that we can be sure we have a two way skype (or alternative) session set up. We'll have a projector and wallspace dedicated to you. Send along requests to jason@emunications.com and I'll have you added to the basecamp project. Project scope is there (loosely). At the bare minimum, we would be transferring their existing site to Drupal and providing them with roles appropriate for editing sections for the site. It would be really fantastic if we could hit all of the items in basecamp.

We've already sent out some of the press releases, but will revise them to include SADUG(?) and URL (if you like). Send along any information you'd like us to try to include.

Hi Charlotte-Anne!
You know, we'd much prefer to see your smiling face in person, but, a virtual Charlotte-Anne is better than none. Welcome!

Development site

TallDavid's picture

I've setup a basic development site for this project at HoustonDrupal.org. Below is the current sign-up message:

Greetings!
the HoustonDrupal.org website is a development site for the Houston Drupal Group's philanthropic efforts. At this time, we are limiting accounts to Drupal User Group members who wish to pitch-in on development and stake-holders from our charity partners.

If you are member of one of these groups, please sign-up for an account, but, please be patient since manual approval is required before the new account is active. You'll receive an email when the account is approved.. It will take anywhere from a few hours to a day or two for us to activate your account. Please be patient.

...

P.S. If you have an account on Drupal.org, please use the same Username on this site.

The site is live, but, untested. Roles have been created for User, Editor, Builder and Admin. If you're a member of the Houston or San Antonio Drupal user groups and are planning to work on this project, please sign up for an account using the same username as you use on Drupal.org.

Once the development is complete, we can work with the charity to move the site to their domain. We can work through issues and logistics at tomorrows meetup.

Where's the wiki?

TransitionKojo's picture

I may not be overly clever, but I can't find the wiki you mentioned.
:-(

The meetup wiki can be found at the link below

It's available as a tab from the HDUG GDO landing page.

The event will be held at the Vineyard on the Square (http://www.discovervineyard.com/) where space has been generously donated. We'll have a wall and projector dedicated to the San Antonio Drupal Users Group and hope to draw a crowd. If you've got ideas about how to make this event an even greater success, jump on board and share!

We've got about 13 folks signed up in basecamp so far and have started to define the project features. If you haven't done so already, send an email to me jason@emunications.com to be added. Things are starting to really get rolling.

I'll be there

Site Accessibility

Silicon.Valet's picture

After a little research and some discussion with FBWC, we were unable to find anything to suggest that there is a requirement for accessibility imposed on us by the indirect funding. I was hoping that some more knowledgeable folks would be able to flesh this out a bit for us.

http://www.access-board.gov/sec508/summary.htm

key bits:
The standards apply to Federal web sites but not to private sector web sites (unless a site is provided under contract to a Federal agency, in which case only that web site or portion covered by the contract would have to comply).
The scope of section 508 is limited to the Federal sector. It does not apply to the private sector, nor does it generally impose requirements on the recipients of Federal funds with the exception of activities carried out in a State under the Assistive Technology Act of 1998, as amended pursuant to section 4(d)(6)(G) of that act.
4(d)(6)(G) activities carried out in the State that are
authorized under this Act, and supported by Federal funds received under this Act, will comply with the standards established by the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board under section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (20 U.S.C. 794d);
If we're missing something, we'd like to know as it will be an important consideration. For now, we'll operate under the assumption that accessibility is a goal, but not a requirement.

That said, accessibility should definitely weigh heavily in our design decisions. Geri should be an excellent resource given his involvement with AIR (http://www.knowbility.org/air-houston/)

Stuart has helpfully posted a short-list of accessibility targets to the basecamp project that should be required reading. Keep them in mind while taking on your particular part of the site.

Shouldn't this event be on http://groups.drupal.org/event/2010-07-17?

Also, I have in mind a certain start and end time (but won't write it here for fear of misguiding anyone). Could someone who knows please state the hours of the good ol' fashion barn raising for FBWC?

Event posted, time 9a-4p this Saturday the 17th

texas-bronius's picture

Ok, good thinking, Bronius. Here is the event to sign up:

8:30 to 4pm and beyond

Silicon.Valet's picture

The doors will open at 8:30, after 4 we'll be moved into the private room while dinner guests arrive.
