What poll?? Anyway, works for me.

[Edit] OK, now I see where it is :)

I'd love to come and meet

BobJKuo's picture

I'd love to come and meet some drupal users, but can only make it if it's on the 20th...

I already voted, but thought I'd emphasize the point

It is entirely possible...

I think I might be able to convince one or two Drupal nuts from here in Chicago to come down and visit. :) More information to come when I have it!

Vague topic suggestions

HorsePunchKid's picture

Thanks for finding a room for us, John!

I have a couple of suggestions for topics, or rather things that I've had trouble with and would be curious what other peoples' experiences or solutions have been.

  1. Image galleries. I am (or was) a big fan of Gallery2. I'd love to be able to manage my photo galleries with Drupal, but I haven't found a convincing way to do it yet. And with on the order of thousands of photos, I'll need to be pretty thoroughly convinced before trying to convert. :) So is there a good way to do this with CCK, Views, Taxonomy, Pathauto, and friends? What about ImageField, Imagecache, and the Image module?
  2. Effective management of multi-site installs. What's the best way to push updates to a dozen sites with dozens of modules with minimum downtime and maximum reliability?
  3. Drupal 6. What's new, and why is it important? When do I need to start planning for its arrival?

I'm sure I could brainstorm some more topics. I don't think there's anything I'd be qualified to present on, except possibly the fairly boring and straightforward path_redirect module. But even just discussion on these topics could be fun and interesting.

I don't want to volunteer Karen for anything, but her presentation on CCK6 at the last meetup was very interesting, both from the "how to use it" perspective and the "evolution of the internals" perspective. The site demos we saw for projects using Drupal as a backend for Flash were also fascinating. I'm not saying we should rehash the last meetup, but these topics are food for thought, at least.

I like the big picture topics

johnbarclay's picture

I like the big picture or architecture topics like horsepunch kids first suggestion. Like which commonly used modules are good for what? There is plenty of info on the details of implementation on drupal.org. A group discussion on deciding how to architect a site or a feature of a sit intitially could be very useful.

I would also be interested in the Drupal-powered Flash and Flex stuff that brian and steve present on. I may catch this at DrupalCon Boston though.

Another handy topic for me would be development environment and tequniques: devel module, ide, debugging, etc.

Proposed Agenda for Wednesday

johnbarclay's picture
  1. Maybe a circle around saying what people are currently working on and their experience with Drupal for intros at the beginning.

  2. An hour or so of presentation from whoever steps forwards to present. Maybe

- Steve Merrill or Brian McMurray on Druplash or Druplex
- Maybe Karen could could do an abbreviated version of her Event Results with CCK and Views talk that she's doing at Drupalcon? http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/session/site-recipe-tracking-event-resul...

  1. Then free for all show and tell and networking. We could just throw questions like Stevens S's to the group. If no one steps forward to present we can do this the whole time. I think we would get more new drupal users if we had at least one presentation.

I think a mix of presentation and networking is good.

I'll order pizza for 7pm for those who rsvp and some extra. Let me know if you have any preferences. If you need wireless, let me know your name and I can setup a UIUC campus guest account.

Moshe just added a signup

karens's picture

Moshe just added a signup button to this page that you can use to indicate if you plan to come. I plan to come. I'd be glad to do a presentation on my DrupalCon program, except that it isn't prepared yet :) I can do a rough overview of it, which would also force me to do what I need to do anyway and get something prepared, so that's not all bad :)

Or I can talk very briefly about some the ideas that came out of the Data Architecture Design Sprint (http://groups.drupal.org/data-architecture-design-sprint) in Chicago last week where we discussed the future of fields in core. I probably won't do that subject justice, but I can give you some of the flavor of it.

Also, where is the best place to park for this meeting? I don't really know my way around campus.

[Edit] And I'd like wireless.

johnbarclay's picture

Park on 6th street to the west of building. free and plentiful. Room is in basement toward the middle of the long hall.

Another possible subject --

karens's picture

Another possible subject -- demo the shiny new Drupal 6 and talk about changes.

I'd be glad to present on

smerrill's picture

I'd be glad to present on Drupal and Flash and SWFAddress, or I could present on some other topics, as well. Let me know what you'd like to hear about.

I would also like a guest WiFi account if I could.

I'll also try and see who else from Bradley U wants to come down. I know Brian's interested if he's not too busy with work this week, and I might have a student or two interested in going.

Brian thinks he'll be able

smerrill's picture

Brian thinks he'll be able to come, and I put it out to Multimedia students here at Bradley, as well.

Count Me In

davidneedham's picture

I'll be there.

I could do a brief presentation on Ubercart if anyone is interested. Or I could do a super basic "how to install and setup a basic drupal site in 10 min or less" presentation in drupal 5 - though I could probably do 6 also.

Pinning Down Agenda

johnbarclay's picture

Not alot of comments on what people want, just on what could be presented. Just for the sake of getting the work out to local drupal users not in this group yet how's this sound for an agenda?

  1. A circle around saying what people are currently working on and their experience with Drupal for intros at the beginning.
  2. An hour or so of presentation. Can these each be about a half hour?
    * Steve Merrill on Drupal and Flash and SWF Address
    * Karen on Drupal 6
  3. Then free for all of show and tell and networking. I'd like to see Ubercart. We could just throw questions like Stevens S's to the group. I think we would get more new drupal users if we had at least one presentation.

John

Thanks. This went well.

johnbarclay's picture

We mostly had a general discussion that included among many things picking modules, LDAP, group modules, and getting advice on architectures.

Steve showed us some Drupal - Flash and previewed his Drupal Con talk. He also showed the Bradley multimedia department site multimedia.bradley.edu and some other Drupal sites.

Karen showed us some highlights of Drupal 6 and the new CCK and Dates Modules.

Special thanks again to those who travelled over.

johnbarclay's picture

Anyone know a good module or approach for for this one?

In considering converting our College's website to Drupal ( http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/) from our homegrown system, I don't see an obvious way of inheriting hierarchical data. We use this alot. For example at the top level (http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/) the contact email might be info@ed.uiuc.edu. At the second or third level a unit may or may not want to override this value with their own contact email address. We do this with many properties such as banner image, unit title, show feedback form, etc. that the unit authors need to be able to edit.

Currently we just have an optional properties. html file in each folder that contains a table of these variables. If a variable is populated in the table it overrides the value above it in the hierarchy.

While I could easily see representing our hierarchy in a book structure, I'm not sure about the inheritance issues.

My best guess is to create a custom content type for all the web pages with all the properites fields in them, tie them into a book structure, and create a custom modules to read/inherit the properties from the parent book pages and turn them into meaningful data for the templates.

I tried to describe our architecture here ( http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/oet/web/edwebs/programming/final.html )
