Hello
I'm using Acquia Slate for while and its an awesome theme.
Im trying to modify it a little and one of the steps that is stopping me is probably a newbie one.

EDIT: I already modded those files. I'm still curious about other PNG features but it will demand some study.
What I did was to create new files in Photoshop and saved them as PNG, since these files are normal image files without slices or alpha channel stuff.
Anyway if you can give me some advice of where to find the steps to create and use PNG effectively it will help me.
You can check the progress at www.ruta-austral.com
Thank you
Marcelo

Generally if the original

Generally if the original file is good quality, like all Top Notch Themes, I just open the png in Photoshop and change the colors using the bucket fill, If it's a gradient, I use the gradient tool, fin tuned with my specific colors, level of transparency and effect. A lot of people don't like using the bucket tool, but personally I've used it many times and have gotten excellent results... that is as long as I watch the transition levels. A lot of folks make it more complicated than it really is, getting into the slices and etc. But if it's a simple block gradient, there's really no need for all that. Just open, zoom in and use the bucket dropper!

But anyway, here's a pretty decent article on making png's, along with some tips: http://www.ehow.com/how_2034277_make-png-photoshop.html

Hope that helps!

Thank you for the answer and

Thank you for the answer and the link.
My question was motivated by the files I've mentioned because they could not be edited in Photoshop. After opening them, no tools were available to work in Photoshop, neither bucket or gradient. Nothing, no layers other than index and it was locked and could not be unlocked. Kind of weird.

Ahhh...

I see. It sounds like you just needed to create a transparent layer in order to work with the image. It would be: Layer> New> Background from Layer. You may also need to change the mode from Index to RGB. Give that a try!

Thanks and check it out

Index to RGB, that was the trick. Anyway, I`ve made new PNGs for my theme.
Please check it at www.ruta-austral.com
