Greetings,

How can I setup workflow in such a way that the "next moderator" in the workflow is determined/evaluated during the workflow based on various conditions?

For example, suppose I have a content type "Service Ticket."

The user (who is an employee) may submit a service request to:

(a.1) Request a new workstation. Since this is an asset request, the employee's manager must approve the request before the request moves to the service desk who will process the request. in this case, when the employee submits the request, the "next moderator" is the employee's manager.

(a.2) A variation of this would be: the employee's manager is the one submitting the request on behalf of the employee (hence the approval is implicit). The request will indicate who the asset is for. in this case, the "next moderator" would be the service desk.

(b) Request technical support. This type of request does not require the employee's manager's approval. so, the "next moderator" is the service desk.

Can this be achieved using workflow + rules? how? if not, any suggestions?

Thank you.

Sounds like a job for Maestro

Here at Nextide we’ve created the Maestro module which suits all of the requirements noted. Maestro allows you to create task driven workflows that support approvals, flexible task assignment like the ones you noted, and conditional workflow routing depending on past conditions. Maestro can support content publishing workflows but is also designed for business related workflows from a simple process to complex business processes.

Maestro is available for download and has been released as an alpha since Drupal 7 is still in alpha and we are looking for peer review by the community.

I’ve just finished creating a tutorial video on YouTube which describes how to create a workflow similar to the one you have described.

Also check out our blog where my colleague has created an article describing the interactive function task, which is one of the key tasks you will need to create the workflow you described. There are a series of blog posts on Maestro and more are planned.
