It could be nice to make shipping quotes free, for particular product classes, or even for particular product. I ve started to implement something like this, and ubercart gives all the hooks i need.
I ve not find a such module on drupal.org.

I've set this up before using the flat rate shipping quote and conditional actions, but it's a bit of a pain. It would be nice to have a free shipping type that can easily be applied to certain products, product classes, and/or certain time period. Maybe it could be integrated with an existing discount module? (Or maybe one of the discount modules already has this sort of functionality)

I have never seen something like that in discount modules, but maybe. Is it really possible to set up this functionnality per product using flat rate?
According to me, the idea is to override the callback of the shipping methods, not to create a free shipping method. If we use the default callback, all the shipping methods will be proposed to the customer.
At the moment, the free
At the moment, the free shipping quotes module has the following behavior :
If all the products for the order are free of shipping quotes, display custom message, and made shipping quotes totally free.
If one or several products of the order are free of shipping quotes, remove theme from the calculation, when they could increase shipping quote total.
I've tried the code with :
- Flat Rate (If there is one product with shipping quotes, the normal flat rate is applied)
- Weight Quote (The free of shipping quotes products are removed from the calculation based on the weight)
- Table Quote (In this case, the products are not removed from the calculation)
module available to community?
i've also been looking for this feature (as well as have found quite a few posts but no modules or simple solutions). if you have written this as a module, are you willing to share it with the community? i for one would greatly appreciate it!

How do get around the error
How do get around the error message "Invalid option selected. Recalculate shipping quotes to continue." when you have free shipping products in the same checkout cart as the products that have shipping quotes?
