A plea: Consider a non-Thursday day for one of the two DUG meetings

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I live in Surrey, and only recently found out about my local Drupal User Group. I've been able to attend twice, and each time I'm very glad I went. I really wish I could take part more often and help contribute to and grow the group.

However Thursday nights I'm busy with another (non programming) group that meets weekly. This is my sole social "out of the house" event each week. I think I'm free on Thursday in the latter weeks of April, August, and December, but that's it. Practically any other time on the 24/7 clock other than Thursday nights work for me.

Heading all the way downtown to Vancouver would be an option for me, if it weren't also on Thursdays. My best "local" option might be to head to the new Bellingham Drupal Group (and hope they also don't have a meeting on Thursdays), but this obviously isn't practical.

I'd like to make a plea that the Greater Vancouver Drupal community consider that the two Drupal meetups should not be scheduled on the same weekday. I don't expect this change to be made on my sole behalf, or any time soon (certainly not for the next several months), but rather to give the community an option in case this day isn't available to them.

If I've missed out on a old discussion on which day the meetings should be scheduled, my apologies in advance. If Thursday really is the best date for both the communities of Vancouver and Surrey, then by all means keep it!

If there's a rationale for

If there's a rationale for Thursday beyond "tradition", I don't know it.

It sounds like you're a bit more frustrated by it than I am, Trevor, but it's a good point. I know that it's a pretty rare Thursday when I don't have to pick whether or not to attend the Drupal group or something else. As such, it's never stuck in my head that the first, last, third, or whichever Thursday is the one where Drupally stuff happens.

I wonder how many of us actually know to be there at such-and-such a time without checking first.

I didn't pick the day so I'm

I didn't pick the day so I'm not sure what the original rational was. I've continued booking meetings on Thursday because I haven't heard anyone lobby for a different day.

My personal experience is there's so much going on that there's almost literally no "best" day. However, (and I cringe at opening a can of worms) if the general feedback is a different day would work better for the group I don't have a problem with changing the day.

It would be wonderful if some less formal events could happen, as well. Trevor, I know you're following the freelance discussion. Maybe something on that front would help.

+1 to some less formal events

+1 to some less formal events esp. over the winter. The space that The Jibe now has access to is awesome for co-working and sprinting, so that will help a lot (thanks to their generosity with it). But would also be great to do the odd purely social get together!

Hi Trevor,

I'm planning a co-work event on Oct. 26th at Boston Pizza from 3- 6pm. Would that work for you? This venue is right next to the Surrey Central Skytrain station. So it will be easy for people from Vancouver to join us.
Let me know if this date works for you.

Katy :-)

Hey Katy. I won't be able to make it at 3 (kids coming home from school) but from 4-6 sounds good to me.
