displaying last updated info in footer

I am presently created a small website for someone, The site was done using HTML, CSS and JQuery. I now am now in the process of expanding the functionality of the site using Drupal.
One thing I need to know is how to indicate the last date the site was updated in the footer. It can be done using JavaScript and/or possibly storing the update history in the database. Does drupal allow a sites update history to be easily stored and retrieved?
