forum module email list

I'm looking to add forums to a drupal site - I would like all the obvious features like good threading, moderation etc. I would also like to segregate into public and private.

I'd also like to add a self managing email list - mainly to publish a regular newsletter

Recommendations and experiences would be appreciated.
