- About Me
I started programming on Multics using PL/1 in 1979, then went to Unix and C in 1980. I did OS kernel work for several computer manufacturers in Massachusetts, then helped build an C++ object-oriented database system that is still on the market since 1990. Mostly database internals and infrastructure work in Java has occupied me in recent years. I did a large project in Perl back in 1994 or so, but that language has changed so much I hardly recognize it anymore. Recently I used Ruby on Rails for a side project. Ruby is nice. I hate php, but Drupal is cool enough that I'll use it anyway.
After reading Paul Graham's Hackers and Painters I'm thinking it's high time for me to spend some quality time with Lisp or one of its derivatives. I've used Lisp for scripting emacs but that's about it.
I host several websites for clients on a virtual Debian box. My experience with hosting services has been not good, so I want complete control over the host computer, even though it means I have to be a unix sysadmin too. I haven't tried to make money with hosting; it's a freebie for my clients. So far.
I don't really do web design much, I collaborate with clients who do the design part and I provide the engineering. This division of responsibilities isn't always easy.
I also have a day job, and all this web stuff is a fun sideline.
Probably more than anyone wanted to know.
