out for drinks/social afterward

Some of us have been talking about how it would be nice to hang out after the meetup. We need to leave RMI shortly after 9pm so it would be good to have a place to talk, hang out and have some drinks. So ... any suggestions? These meetups are getting big, so we may have to accommodate a lot of people. When we decide on a place, we'll post the location and directions here so everyone can find it.

sounds good to me

It took some planning and encouragement, but after last last night's meeting 7 of us did end up walking to a Mediterranean fast food place (it was the first one that we found that was open). Unfortunately we lost 4 others that would have joined us if a restaurant had been closer.

The music and seating weren't the best but I think it was worth it just to have some unstructured time with other Drupaleros. I personally find the cafe/salon style much more enjoyable than the classroom style where everyone faces the front.

Local places

Chris Charlton's picture

IHOP - Open 24 hours, various foods to eat (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Located on the east side of Lincoln Blvd., just south of Washington.

Islands - restaurant and (small) bar. Located on Washington Blvd., west of Lincoln or Abott Kinney.

Thai East - good prices for good Thai food. Closes by 11pm, I think. There are at least 2 other Thai places nearby as well.

Indian food - there's at least 3 places near RMI.

Chinese food - there's at least 3 Chinese food places near RMI.

Abbott Kinney has a few places to eat, like a Sushi joint, cuisine pizza, mexican food, and some expensive fancy joints and bars. Main Street has more places to eat, which is north of Venice Blvd. and west of Abott Kinney. Pizza, chain restaurants, more bars. Washington Blvd. has In & Out burger, Mexican food, sushi, Thai, Italian, and some BBQ joint(s). Lincoln Blvd. also has California Chicken Cafe, To-Go's, and various hole in the walls that are usually pretty good.

There isn't much fast food around. A single Mc'D's, one Dell Taco, and that's really it besides El Pollo Loco on Lincoln.

I can't even really mention the Venice (beach) restaurants north of Venice Blvd, there's handfuls.

do people want food or drinks?

OpenChimp's picture

just wondering what people prefer to do ... go for drinks or go for food? Both would be best, but some of us want to have a few drinks and hang out more casually.

Let us know so we can plan accordingly.

Are there any plans yet for food or drinks after the meeting? I'm hungry already.

Islands tonight, after meeting.

Hey, if they're open until 1030-11 - and I haven't checked - lets go to Islands for some socialization. I suspect they have a good mix of food, bar, and space.

Chris posted details about Local Places to RMI. I'd be open to other ideas, too, as long as I can get some grub.

Any chance of having a

Any chance of having a meetup on a weekend again?

maybe?

OpenChimp's picture

We will definitely be keeping our regular meeting time (last Tuesday of each month at 7pm) because it's been working really well.

But if we introduce an extra meeting sometime we could try out a weekend meetup. Given the rapid growth and good reception to the meetups that have been going on, a second meetup may be a good thing.

Weekends

Chris Charlton's picture

Weekends at the RMI may be hard since most of their training courses are held on the weekends. But, we can still ask.

Nothing against more meetups, but people need to remember that they can hang and chat with local Drupal users on our chat room (IRC chat room) since a good number of us regulars are online daily. Come, talk to us online. If you don't know anything about IRC, then read up on our LA Drupal resource page. Bring an online friend.

Pizza?

It's great when we can meet and eat at the same time. Can we order food delivered to RMI? I'd love to hang out afterward, but it's a long drive back home :)

Food sponsor

Chris Charlton's picture

Good timing...

  • Work Habit agreed to sponsor drinks (and maybe food). I will confirm with them on the budget soon. If someone (or some company) would like to co-sponsor food separately, then we can allow that.

  • Also, I have been planning a Drupal Showcase Day/Night in the background. I was thinking a day or night, longer than 2 hrs, that people can come see works of (local) Drupal users/companies. Food, drinks, maybe BBQ, but what do folks think? I'll start another thread when I have a better idea of what the agenda would be and ping everyone to show their stuff. I think summer is good for it; and I debated if we should do it near DrupalCamp L.A. or not.
