Agenda

   Users Helping Users

The meetup begins at 7:30pm but the doors open a little earlier at 7pm for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal. Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bonafide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!

   Job announcements and open Q&A

Everyone has a problem every now and then and the open Q&A session is a chance for attendees to divine answers from the collective wisdom of the group. This is also an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.

   Presentations

Drupal 7 Entities by Erik Webb and Ashok Modi
Wondering what entities, bundles, fields and formatters are all about in Drupal 7? They're a huge advancement from how things are done in Drupal 6 and as announced in the comments below, Ashok Modi (@btmash) has prepared a presentation introducing entities and their place in Drupal 7. Erik Webb (@erikwebb) will then demonstrate some basic hooks and usage. There will be time at the end for questions and answers.

   Lightning talks

We have time as well for lightning talks, which are 5-10 minute presentations from attendees who would like to share something with the group. If you'd like to give a lightning talk, be sure to come a few minutes early and bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.

As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.

   Raffle! Prizes! Collect them all!

We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors in the Los Angeles area and around the world. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers.

   Breakout Groups

As we've done for the past few months now, we'll split up into groups (sometimes called BoFs, or birds of a feather) and each group can jump into a particular topic that's set at the beginning of the meetup. The topics for these BoFs so far have ranged from high performance websites, Features-driven development, PCI compliance and general "getting started" discussions.

Wrap up and Drupal After Dark

Several of us may be going to a local bar or restaurant for a Drupal After Dark afterward. Leave a comment below if you have ideas of a possible bar or restaurant that is nearby.

About LA Drupal

The LA Drupal community in and around Los Angeles, California, is one of the world's largest regional Drupal user groups. With regular Drupal trainings, monthly meetings and social gatherings, LA Drupal is Southern California's largest hub for all things Drupal. LA Drupal is also the producer of the annual DrupalCamp LA conference, the largest independent Drupal event in the world for three years running, and Drupal Design Camp LA, a design-oriented conference that was on February 5-6, 2011.

Attending LA Drupal events is one of the best ways to meet and talk with other Drupaleros and we encourage you to attend as many meetings and special events as you can, including the LA Drupal meetups in Santa Monica on the Westside and in the San Gabriel Valley. Whether it's about finding solutions to problems you've been having, sharing something you've learned or just meeting interesting like-minded people, the LA Drupal events are an essential resource for Drupal professionals and hobbyists alike.

If you aren't already part of LA Drupal, it's easy to become a member. We have several meetings every month that are free and open to everyone. There are also social gatherings and formal working meetings that sometimes happen throughout the month. Events are announced at http://groups.drupal.org/la/events

Presentation ideas

BTMash's picture

I'm not sure if anyone is lined up to present, but I'd be happy to do so. Some of the ideas I had in mind:

  • Rules - I'm not sure how far I should go into this (workflow / rules scheduler / flags / drupal commerce? I haven't tried 7 quite yet) but I wouldn't mind showing basic tutorials on how to set up rules on a website to perform various actions. Also fairly flexible on the amount of time allotted to this.
  • Site Showcase - CalArts is getting ready to finally migrate its photo archive to a CMS which turned out to be Drupal - I'd be happy to show what kind of things we are running for it all to work.
  • Drupal 7 Database Layer - For those that may be upgrading their modules or starting to build new things for Drupal 7, db_query is no longer the major function in town. A lot has changed in this area and it might be neat to talk about how to write it out.
  • Entities - I'm not entirely sure on what they are other than the fact that they seem to be a massive change in core and affect various types of content (nodes, users, comments are all entities) and understanding how to work with them. Maybe someone else presenting on this might be a better idea ^_~.

Great Entity API Presentation

This was a great starter for me to learn the Entity API. From fago at Drupal Developer Days last week - http://wolfgangziegler.net/sites/wolfgangziegler.net/files/entity_api.pdf

Volunteer to present with "Drupal Design Patterns"

erikwebb's picture

I will be in town for a client for the next two weeks and will likely attend both meetups (so can present at either). I'll be presenting at Florida Drupalcamp on Saturday on the topic of "Drupal Design Patterns". Really, meaning a lot of the coding techniques that are employed all over core, hoping to help developers learn some more of that core goodness. I'm very excited about the topic and I think it'd be very helpful for intermediate-advanced developers (i.e. already know Schema API, Form API, etc.). I obviously don't know the LA crowd, so let me know if there are any topics I can fill a void in or co-present on. I've been developing for D7 sites for the past few months, so there's plenty going on there as well.

Here's my abstract from the camp - http://www.fldrupalcamp.org/program/sessions/drupal-design-patterns

Short excerpt -
"As you navigate throughout Drupalʼs source, youʼll see many programming techniques (some little-known) used over and over. These techniques and patterns make programming much easier and more efficient. During this session, youʼll learn about some of the following tricks -
• Creating your own hooks to make your modules extensible
• Using load arguments in the menu system
• Using static variables to speed up repetitive operations
• Utilizing Drupalʼs cache to improve performance
• Storing complex data easily in the database automatically
• And more!"

Great to hear!

Hello Erik. Glad to hear you'll be in town for both meetups! If you'd like to practice your "Drupal Design Patterns" presentation or speak on anything D7, we'd love to have you at the Downtown LA meetup: http://groups.drupal.org/node/112639.

Looking forward to meeting you.

What do you think? This topic

erikwebb's picture

What do you think? This topic certainly isn't for beginner developers, so is one meetup typically more advanced than the other?

All topics are welcome! The

christefano's picture

All topics are welcome! The meetups in Downtown Los Angeles started out being more beginner-friendly, but that isn't necessarily the case any more. The attendance has been about the same at the last few Westside and Downtown meetups, too.

sounds great

oseldman's picture

Erik, the Design Patterns topic sounds great, especially if you already have something prepared. I don't think this talk would be a problem, as the LA crowd is pretty diverse (there'll be plenty of experienced developers attending).

That said, the group is also very eager for D7 info, so I wouldn't want to discourage you from leaning in that direction if you were so inclined.

Looking forward to meeting you.

I don't speak for others in

BTMash's picture

I don't speak for others in the group but I'd be happy to just sit back and hear you speak about and discuss Drupal Design Patterns. And it was precisely that pdf which made me think about going over Drupal Entities with the group (especially at this one since I can't make the downtown meetup ^_~) :)

Would you like to do a

erikwebb's picture

Would you like to do a co-presentation on Entities? I am working on an authorization framework that needs an Entity overhaul, so I definitely need to add it to my toolbox very soon.

Sure! I'd be up for that :D

If anyone reading this hasn't

christefano's picture

If anyone reading this hasn't been to Oversee yet, I enthusiastically suggest attending the Downtown meetup (and checking out Oversee's available Drupal jobs at http://oversee.net/careers). Oversee has been a great venue, food and parking sponsor for us but that meetup and the one next month will likely be the last times we meet at Oversee.

The majority of LA Drupal managers recently voted to reduce the number of LA Drupal meetups to just one a month, and while anyone is welcome to organize "Drupal meetups" anywhere they'd like, the "LA Drupal meetups" are now on the Westside at our current venue at Media Temple.

That's too bad. I thought
