Wish I could make it, but I have a fundraiser that night.

Views 2 & Drupal 6 sounds like it should be interesting.

Have fun ...

Another fundraiser

Sounds like an interesting session, but I also have a fundraiser/event for that evening, for Green Map. Is there something about this date? The theater my girlfriend's performing at is having a fundraiser that evening too.

I'd be interested if someone

I'd be interested if someone presented on any experience they had with Panels 2.

I could present on some work I'm doing recently on a CCK AnnotationField module.

Panels 2

We are using Panels 2. I don't know what to present, per se, but I could talk about our experience with it.

Views 2

I'd like to know about people's experience with upgrading from Drupal 5 / Views to Drupal 6 / Views 2. There is an upgrade path but it is limited, and Earl has written that it may be best, an in some cases necessary, to re-build one's Views in Views 2 from scratch.

Given that it can be a little time consuming to upgrade all of one's modules and rebuild one's Views (and we have maybe 30 of them), what is the best way to upgrade a live site? Must we take it down for hours to do it?

I really appreciate that Drupal improves so much from release to release but some of these upgrades are rather hard on live sites. New Drupal releases seem more targeted for new sites, leaving a lot of already live sites behind. Any thoughts?

Agenda

Is there a way to get added to the agenda for this meetup? I am going to be in NYC around this time and would enjoy speaking to the group about some of the work Trellon has done with alternative search engines for Drupal.

I would like to know how the Context feature works in Panels 2. Also how to tie two different views together (view of Artist and Albums)

How can I add someone on the attendees' list?

I'd like to bring one of my colleagues, named Dorsey Shaw. Please let me know if this possible.

Thanks!

Hello

robloach's picture

Didn't we cover parts of Views 2 last meetup? Have we done Panels 2 yet?

We just did a very basic

We just did a very basic Views 2 overview. If you want to delve into a particular aspect of Views 2, that would be cool.

Search...

Alternate search engines aren't really my strength. Are there any other topics you'd be interested in having someone talk about?

Well...

techsoldaten's picture

Well, I was offering to talk about them myself, since I enjoy talling about Drupal.

Since you mention it, perhaps you could discuss Vegas, the Palms, Ykos...

M

What happens in Vegas, stays in vegas...

alex ua's picture

I suppose I could talk about those things, but then I'd have to kill you...

Anyway, the comment wasn't aimed at you: we are both listed as talking about search engines for Drupal. I would love to hear more about Xapian!

michaelemeyers's picture

sure, would be happy to talk about some of the projects we are working on - some exciting things in the works.

fyi, since search is a topic for the evening: we have used sphinx for over a year now - it's great - super fast (a few milliseconds), provides good results, and it's been extremely reliable / stable. also, we are about to rollout a new product (~6/7) that uses xapian. we'll keep sphinx for the site search but xapian was better choice for this new product - it's great at updating index's in or close to real time (but it's much slower then sphinx at generating indexes from scratch), it has a better api for data mining, and it has a c++ library which is used by our client directly...

Meeting Notes

robloach's picture

The meeting went very well, here are some notes taken at the meeting:

  • AnnotationField allows you to annotate media, text and any content by using a field. It rocks!
  • Using Xapian on Drupal helped performance, a lot. A search for "help" returned 1727.98 ms vs 75.75 ms without caching and 264.22 ms vs 1.88 ms with caching. The answer? Use Xapian on high performance websites.
  • Views 2's relationships allow you to recieve more detail about things associated with what you're querying. If you're displaying a bunch of comments, you can access the node that the comment was posted on. If you're displaying a node, you can display information based on what user that node was posted by. Panels 2's context is much the same.
