We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Acquia has submitted a 1 minute video about Drupal to the Enterprise 2.0 Launchpad contest. The video site, is actually a Drupal site. If you get a chance to watch this one minute video and vote, it will help give Drupal some exposure at Enterprise 2.0.

We are always pleased to have our work listed as examples of what can be done with Drupal. After each major launch we try to share what we have learned with the community and give credit to those firms that participated in the projects. By giving the appropriate recognition to the the firms that helped us, we create long-term partnerships, promote their business, and properly represent any work listed on our portfolio.

We have worked very hard to build our portfolio. Next to our employees, it is our companies most valuable asset. Anyone in the community is welcome to use these as examples of what can be done with Drupal. We encourage it if it is good for the community and good for Drupal. However, we wouldn't want to see our work listed in the portfolio section of another firm without having our name listed.

Keeping in mind that we love you guys. I think the video is perfect for promoting Drupal. However, my concern is that it is promoting Acquia on the work of others. You and I and the majority of active community members know who built those sites. The questions I have are; (1)Will the President of XYZ Corporation that needs to build a site that does ABC, call Us, You or the other highly qualified firms not listed? (2) Does the video properly reflect the efforts that went into the development of those sites, or does it give the President of XYZ the impression that those sites can be development without custom development? (3) Did Acquia build the Launchpad Contest site:)

Hope all is well. Looking forward to the release of Carbon. JB

Hi. Thanks for speaking up. It's important to get the issue out into the open. I'm sure others may have the same concern.

It's not our intent to promote Acquia on the work of others, and we will try to do a better job of highlighting solution providers whenever possible. We don't offer custom site development services, so we have no motivation to purposely obfuscate the achievement of the companies we want as partners.

As Kieran said, we had a lot of time constraints for this video proposal. But if we get to present at the conference, we'll try to work in the names of the firms involved on the slides (to the extent that we know who it is). We may not be able to do more than list the name of the firm below the screenshot, but hopefully that will be enough to address your concern.

With regard to the question of who a customer will call, I can tell you that we are contacted almost daily by companies looking to get help with Drupal. And we always refer them to qualified Drupal solution providers if it looks like what they are looking for is custom site development. Right now this process is a little haphazard, because we don't have a formal partner program in place yet and our knowledge of the Drupal solution provider landscape is incomplete, but we're acting in good faith in dishing out leads. I estimate that we've referred at least several hundred thousand dollars in potential consulting/services revenue to partners since our inception. We hope to accelerate the flow of referrals over time as we build a network of partners who are willing to work with us to sell subscriptions as part of the solution. That's a big part of our business model.

I hope that helps. Our business model is unlike anything that exists in the Drupal community today, so it's not surprising that it is taking some time for everyone to grok it. But please know that we have only the best interests of Drupal and the community at heart. And please continue keep us honest every step of the way.

Thanks, Jeff, for clarifying

Thanks, Jeff, for clarifying this. I was tracking this "issue" after Jeff Badger posted his - or should I say our? - concerns. I think you have successfully eliminated them now.

Good point about attribution

Amazon's picture

Hi Jeff, it would helpful if we could list who built the sites. It's tough with a 60 second deadline. There are thousands of people who built Drupal, and they don't get unique attribution for their contributions to Drupal either. I think there's also the issue of whether the clients who paid for the sites want to promote the consulting shops who built them from Drupal. Should we provide attribution for client X's site on the say so of Shop Y? It can get sticky very quickly.

1) I think individual consulting shops should promote their work through the development of Drupal case studies. You'll recall, that I worked with four of the development shops who worked on fastcompany.com to get front page post on Drupal.org. If someone who is looking for the developers who worked on that site searches for the site name and Drupal, they hopefully will find the case study giving proper attribution. You can see it's clearly listed here as the top result: http://drupal.org/node/221481

2) I don't believe that a 60 second video can do much else other than demonstrate a vision of what's possible. In the future we will do a better job of indicating that sites were built with custom development.

3) No.

Thanks for your feedback.

I wanted to follow up on this thread given the fact that Acquia made it to the 2nd round in the Enterprise 2.0 Launch Pad contest, giving me the opportunity to create a 2nd video, this time 2 minutes in length. In the first video, I tried capture the spirit of the Drupal phenomenon & highlight some of the great sites that have been built with Drupal. Whenever I talk to someone unfamiliar with Drupal or tech, the list of well-known sites is inevitably what grabs their attention. However, from the beginning of that video, the question of attribution came up repeatedly, as Jeff and Kieran have described.

In the 2nd video, however, I focused on what Drupal the software can do via our evolving Ve.locity.net cycling community demo. In addition, to continue with the Drupal phenomenon theme, I built a Drupal Ecosystem slide to highlight the fact that there are hundreds of companies in the market helping organizations build Drupal websites. For someone unfamiliar with Drupal, the sheer size of the ecosystem should inspire confidence that this an active, growing community they can turn to for assistance when building their websites. I also use this as a transition to discuss Acquia's role in the Drupal ecosystem.

Please share feedback, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
