LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.Collecting Information Quick/Easy with Webform - winstonSorry can't make it- Multi-site setup with Drupal 7 - esod
- Open Lightning Topic - Propose Something!
- "Tougher than leather" - Theming with runvsc base theme (60 min) - johnvsc
- Making your own Drush command - ericduran (20 min)
- HTML5 in Drupal - jensimmons
- Web Scraping - opensanta
- SEO, black/white/gray - duckx (20 min)
- Newbie Birds of a Feather - johnvsc
- Report back from first ever Drupal NYC Intro Camp (maybe 5 min at the beginning?)
- BOF - Building a distributable 'status update' module - steveor
- Drupal Drinks and Drupal Fun at ??? (Suspenders?, Dakota Roadhouse?)
Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide. Therefore, if your name is not on the list they will not let you in. Please ensure to put your full name in your groups.drupal.org profile. Also, Signup closes midnight of the day before the event. We don't have the luxury to add "last minute" attendees.

I'll like to do one on
I'll like to do one on writing Drush commands if people are interested :)
Covering:
- What are drush commands, Why drush commands, what are they good for.
- How to add drush commands to your module.
- Writing one off drush commands.
Also this session can be left for last, only available if we have extra space ;-)
this would be perfect
I have a few bash scripts I'd love to convert to drush and share with d.o -- this presentation would be awesome and save me a bit of time. :)
nevermind -- i'll miss this :(
Nevermind, I'll be in class that night. Oh well, hope someone records this! :)
Drush
Yo eric,
+1
I would definitely come if you present drush. Even though I'm very attached to my NYSE update hooks!
can't have enough drush
I installed Drush 3.0 a while a ago on my vps, anything you can do on upgrading to 4 and what's new in drush for d7 would be great - also, drush on my laptop amp stack? Thanks!
Ray
Added, thanks
Drush is always popular ;)
+1 and I will record it too,
+1 and I will record it too, if Eric allows.
I'd like one on
It would be great if you dedicate one session to cover multilingualism in drupal 7
Anyone want to step up on this one?
Or want to +1 it?
I'm guessing it would be of interest as a strength of Drupal.
Webform for lightning round...
I've been using it lately so added it to lightning round list. A quicky, but good for the new folks to see. Time permitting (the last minute of my 5 perhaps!!), I can mention/demonstrate some lesser known options of webform.
If you've used webform be prepared to chime in on what your use case is at the end. Seems to be used to solve a fairly wide variety of problems.
Any more lightning round suggestions people?
Not for Feb, but this could turn into a presentation
Ended up learning more about webform than I intended to in order to make a particular use case work. In the process learned a lot about webform that a casual webform user probably wouldn't be aware of. Thinking that might be a case study presentation for March!
Will still do the 5 min lightning round though. So remember if you have any cool webform use cases (especially where there is a public page you can point me to) please send it my way.
No Really, I will be there this time
I really must apologize for the no show this month -> but we needed to jam on a deadline and I had to bail on the meet up.
So, after a tumultuous start to the new year (and lots of changes) I am in a way better place to rock this out.
Yay

BOF - Building a distributable 'status update' module
BOF - Building a distributable 'status update' module
A new D6/D7 module that would allow for bite-sized social status content to be created in a standardized way within Drupal sites, and then shared to data consumers using one or more open standards like OStatus. This could connect Drupal sites to other platforms like Diaspora and Status.Net, giving sites a choice to own (and monetize if they so choose) their own social data, circumventing (or even integrating with) sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.
I have some live code already in place to create and display various types of social content (status, image, gallery, video, link) using a custom content type with Views, Taxonomy, Lightbox, JW Player. No import/export/communications code is written yet. And I don't have much experience making contribs. Need help! Curious if there is any interest in this project or if possibly another similar module is already underway.
Web scraping in Drupal
I'll be in NYC then, so I'd be happy to go to the meetup :) I can do a talk on web scraping in Drupal, if there's interest.
Covering:
- What web scraping is and when it's useful.
- How to build scrapers and crawlers in Drupal using Feeds, contributed parsers and plugins, and some helpful browser add-ons.
- (Time / interest permitting) Future directions: highlight of some standing feature requests, and review other existing tools for what they suggest would be possible / useful for Drupal.
scrapers, crawlers in Drupal using Feeds, parsers
I'm definitely interested in: scrapers, crawlers in Drupal using Feeds, parsers
+1 - definitely want to know
+1 - definitely want to know more about web scraping..

Black Hat SEO Tools ? Any Interests?
i always wanted to present something, but not sure what. lately i've been learning about black hat seo tactics and wouldnt mind sharing my findings, but im no expert on it as i just skimmed the surface so far. i wouldnt mind giving a quick 5-min lightning presentation on the basics of it. any interests?
web scraping
I would be interested!
This sounds interesting. I am
This sounds interesting. I am interested. Do you plan on providing any directly Drupal-related tips/no-no's?
What is this actually?
I didn't know what black hat SEO is so googled it. One definition was "Black Hat search engine optimization is customarily defined as techniques that are used to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner."
So if that is really what you mean I'd kinda be -1 on that.
If the suggestion is on how
If the suggestion is on how to spot it, avoid it or fix it, then I am +1 for this.
Defending against the Dark Arts of SEO - Drupal Security
yea i guess it would be considered black hat and grey hat too. In a sense this would relate to drupal security as it would show us how the black hatters do it and how we can defend against it. There are programs for both black and grey hat. This would definately be a good FYI as it would show us what the dark side of seo entails. From what I see its the new age of keyword stuffing from the early days of the internet. Either you get to it first or your competition will!
Definition of grey hat: http://www.stayonsearch.com/8-greyhat-tactics-seos-are-using-use-at-your...
If you want check it out yourself here are some of the apps developed for the dark arts: xrumer, senuke, scrapebox, and some other ones i forgot.
I'm sure someone at the meetup knows about these too. Very interesting stuff.
I use White Hat SEO
I use White Hat SEO techniques exclusively.
Drupal is a formidable framework for SEO, once you configure Nodewords, Page Titles, Pathauto and some other modules such as XMLsitemap. I think it also helps to have Google Analytics installed, as well as integration with Feedburner - making Google hyper-aware of your content. When I publish a blog post on my modest PR3 personal site, it appears in Google search results within 30 minutes, and often in a high ranking without any further SEM.
There are many resources about SEO, one of my favorites is the Organic SEO Book/Wiki
Most SEO is common sense mixed with trial and error. The SEM experts I know and work with are primarily marketing pros with many contacts for specific industries, so they can get your web site publicity and not only links, but also traditional marketing such as press releases, reviews etc.
¿ are you netsperienced ?

White SEO & Black SEO
yea same here, i was totally all white hat seo too. lately i realized that its also good to know about what the black hat seo entails to truely understand the aspects of how it all works. I was totally against black hat seo as i was afraid of getting banned from google and im sure everyone else here is too. this made me not even bother looking into it at all to understand how the dark arts work. the thing with understanding black hat is that it gives you the ability to blur the lines and turn things on a lighter note by ending up in the grey hat area. Everyone does grey hat one way or another, say for everyone's signature there is a link to your own site which has absolutely nothing to do with your posts, that in a sense is a grey hat tactic. it can be seen as black hat because your benefiting by creating a backlink to your site to boost your ranking or it can just be seen as just a link to the user.
The thing is if your in a very niche market selling 'widgets' and you only have a handful of competitors, there is nothing stopping the other guy going black hat taking away your customers. Its really survival of the fittest if your in such an arena. Just think about the days of keyword stuffing, if you didnt do it, you got left behind. Eventually the day will come when the search engines cover up these loop holes in their system and the black hatters will once again find something new to get ahead of the game. These methods are very much in play on high value keywords and black hatters get away with it! the question is how?
I can understand everyone going white hat, but to differentiate yourself its best to know both sides so you know where the line is drawn and when not to cross it.
As for understanding how this works, i can better defend against black hatters trying to penetrate my drupal sites by throwing in a monkey wrench in the forms. Right now everyone feels safe with their captcha, but the black hatters have already cracked it and getting around these systems. You can see it once in a while if you have an older website on old forums software or blog software even though you have captcha turned on. I expect in the coming years more of these types of seo tactics to increase with more sophisticated spamming as if it was a real person.
I call +1
"I can understand everyone going white hat, but to differentiate yourself its best to know both sides so you know where the line is drawn and when not to cross it."
I concur with that statement. It can be hard to tell sometimes whether you're being "clever" or "bad." Knowing what the black hatters are doing gives you a reference point to gauge the ethics of what you/your team is doing.
While I don't favor using black hat SEO, I give this a +1 on the basis of providing perspective.
keep your friends close...
and your enemies closer, or in this case their tactics.
Seriously it is immensely useful to have an understanding of both.

Definitely interested..
Definitely interested.. lightning round, or presentation? This could even break out into a BoF.
+1
Enough interest to add to the schedule
However, not sure it makes sense as a lightning round as it seems more like it will end up being a short presentation followed by a discussion given the interest and diverse views.
Also, lightning round is meant to be more of a "here's how to do this thing the drupal way" sort of stuff.
So perhaps toward the later part of the meeting?
oh i was just thinking it
oh i was just thinking it would just be a short 5 min presentation for me. since your putting me down as a regular presentation i guess 20 min should do it for me. im sure people will have alot of questions about this topic.
HTML5 Update
I'd like to present an update on what's happening with the movement to get HTML5 into core. It's a global group effort, but one that started in NYC, and has a lot of people here working on it. I can talk about where we are at, and what needs to happen next.
Jen Simmons

Great topic

Schedule is starting to look pretty full
Can folks who asked to present provide an estimate of how long they would want to present on their topic and/or more detail on what they want to present on?
After my Session, I'll do a Newbie BoF
Fyi :)
Meeting Schedule is Crowded
The meeting schedule is getting over full. Love the enthusiasm, but could use more details from presenters on what they are presenting and how long they need.
Also, as we get closer if anyone wants to push out to March let us know.
To be honest ...
my presentation will take a full hour - and after post-poning if for a couple of months, I want to give those who have expressed interest their, um, money's worth. hmmm, need to re-evaluate these clichés...
While I know it's only "theming" - there is alot to discuss :) and I want to go over things that will change in the D7 version. plus concepts on how to leverage this into expandable themes...
An hour it is!
And only right and fair - looking forward to it.
So between introductory stuff, maybe 5 or 10 min for lightning round, etc. we'll have something like 45 min to an hour for other presentations so if you have a presentation listed and can hold till March please consider...
My presentation will only be
My presentation will only be 20 mins.
I think is ok to have a packed schedule usually something happens an someone doesn't make it and we end up with anywhere between 30 mins to an hour to spare.
True True
Just giving fair warning to all. It may seem like I'm trying to be the scheduling police or something, but actually it's the opposite. I DON'T want to be the scheduling police ;)
thanks :)
(EOM)
Personally I'd like to see johnvsc's presentation
In a full session , or better yet at a themers play date session.
I'm coming!
is this where I signup?
Click the signup button please
@joeystern,
No, you click the "signup" button up above.
that makes much more sense
I'll do it now!
Real Name -- Reminder
Please make sure that your real name is in your profile, without your real name you will not be allowed in the building, because a list of all those signed up is turned over to the building and security verifies on the day of that you are on the list. So please click ^^ Signups ^^ and find your username and then verify that your full name is there, and on the day of the meetup, please bring a photo ID.
Robbie
Question about the "real name" thing
I always wonder about this – I have "Jack Aponte" in my profile, which is certainly my "real name," but it's not the name on my photo ID. I don't ever put that name up on the internets if I can help it.
I've also never run into any trouble with security at the building – they see that Jack Aponte is close enough to the name on my ID and let me go.
Has anyone else ever run into trouble with the name they use in everyday life and therefore have on their g.d.o profile not matching the name on their ID and security at this building hassling them? If so, could we try talking to security about being aware that there are good reasons for people to use names that are not on their IDs and not to hassle them? And if not, could we change our language around "real name," since to me and others that means "legal name"?
"real name"
In the past at various camps and meetups it has been an issue for some people. The way we've worked around it has been to have people with concerns about posting their "real name" online, send a private message/email to one of the event organizers who puts together the list that's given to building security.
Might be worth bringing this up on the D.O. webmasters issue queue for discussion over the language in the profile form - http://drupal.org/project/issues/webmasters
http://www.thomasturnbull.com
http://twitter.com/thomasturnbull
Good to know, Tom
There are many variables here (building security policy, attitudes of individual security people, etc) but maybe the NYC group can change language about how we put this to be more clear.
Current language:
Remember: You must have your REAL NAME on your groups.drupal.org profile otherwise you will not be able to get in to 7 World Trade Center!
My suggestion:
Building security at 7 World Trade Center requires us to provide a list of names of all attendees. They check this list against photo IDs, and if your name is not on the list they will not let you in. You can put your full name in your groups.drupal.org profile; if you have concerns about putting the name on your photo ID on your g.d.o profile, you can email it to $email_address instead.
+1
I think that's a good suggestion — essentially a quick documentation change, and one that will reduce hassle.
fureigh.com
fureigh on twitter and g.d.o.
Sounds good - though more
Sounds good - though more likely it will be a link to the event organizer's Drupal contact form rather than an email.
http://www.thomasturnbull.com
http://twitter.com/thomasturnbull
I can change that
Yeah, "REAL NAME" could be better phrased. I'll make an appropriate edit as suggested...
However, I have to think about the "you can email it to..." option.
There are two issues here. One is the reality of having to have attendees pass through security at a building that is next to ground zero. The other is that because of the following limitations of groups.drupal.org...
- No ability to enforce that signups have first and last name field filled
- No ability for signup to ask for additional fields that only the author of the node can see (which would REALLY solve this problem)
- Various other issues such as frequently people do update their name fields and it still doesn't show up (not sure if that is still happening).
- The direct email feature on groups.drupal.org is not reliably fast
Right now it takes me between 15 to 20 minutes prepare the list for the venue each time. So over a year that adds up to about 3 hours of work. And it is 15 minutes that has to be done on a particular day at a particular time very carefully and without fail to avoid distressing members of the community who signed up to come.
Does someone want to volunteer to do that for the next year say. If so, let me know at the next meetup and we can give it a try.
On the other hand, much as it pains me, I'm thinking it might make sense to manage the sign up off of gdo. So post the event to gdo same as always, but have people sign up to come via eventbrite or some other free option. Any thoughts on that? That would allow folks to sign up with any name they want. I would do NO editing. And you could then blank the first name and last name fields on gdo which I know a lot of folks prefer.
ID in the real world
If this is about entering the NYC Drupal meetings...realize that you are at Ground Zero - probably the most sensitive area in the country when it comes to ID.
Just my opinion, but security personnel only follow orders, they don't make policy, so they probably don't really care about 'good reasons' for incorrect name matches. I feel your ID worries, the interweb is not always safe. Perhaps a good module to hide our real names on groups.drupal.org might be a good direction for our energies. Again, just my opinion.
what we really need is ....
drupal decoder rings!
(drink more ovaltine!)
Next Themers' Playdate?
I'd love to see a themer's playdate sometime soon...I'll volunteer to help too.

Lightning Round Proposal - DAMP, OS X and Pantheon workflow
Working with Pantheon is really fun and useful, and over the next few months the entire experience is going to get better and better to work with. However, at the moment there are some challenges to overcome in the interface between one's "local" and Pantheon Dev (site import) setup, and going the other way (downloading a Backup tarball and installing it in one's local. Pantheon is in private beta right now, but for any of you who are interested in seeing what it looks like right now and learning about integrating it into your dev workflow, some tips may be helpful. I will be posting all the code and scripts for this 'round for reference.
This workflow is very specific to using DAMP on OS X with Pantheon; however, many of the concepts are going to coincide to some degree with any other stack as well.
I will cover the following in detail:
* "prepping" your DAMP sites for fast integration with Pantheon's setup
* prepping your local site for import into Pantheon
* getting a Pantheon Site backup back into your local
* almost everything is done using the command-line interface (Terminal, OS X's CLI)
I'm sure this next meeting's lightning rounds are full, but maybe this can be scheduled for the next one? By next month Pantheon will just probably have made it easier enough that my session will be irrelevant
I can do this presentation in 5 minutes - 10 with questions, if there are any. This is very much a "step-by-step" presentation. If there are beginner's who find this of interest but are not comfortable using Terminal I'm happy to stay after and do a quick "Using Terminal" intro session.

Hmm, maybe a longer presentation in March?
Had to think about this one a bit. Not sure this is exactly what we had in mind for lightning rounds. I think we're looking more for the newb friendly here's a quick how to put the pieces together with drupal.
It really feels like you'd need 15 or 20 min to do what you've listed (maybe more).
Sure, no problem
That's fine - techniques may have changed by then, become more simple (my talk may not even be relevant!) - those Pantheon guys are moving fast!
On another topic, is there interest in having a UI specialist coming in to talk about UI/IA/UX generally? I have a colleague who is doing a swap with me - I'm presenting Drupal 7 at her local UX group, and ideally she would come present UI at ours, if there's interest. Thoughts? Interest?
Cheers,
Kelly

Lightning round presentation: Multi-site setup with Drupal 7
If there is interest, I can do a lightning round presentation of multi-site setup with Drupal 7. On Linux systems, multi-site install boils down to approximately 20 commands plus a vhost file. I can reference possible Apache installation options as well.
If the agenda is full for February, this can wait until March.
I think this is a good idea!
I think this is a good idea! more Drupal 7 stuff! Added to the lightning round list for Wednesday :)
Suspenders info
Seems like everyone has been happier at Suspenders for the after-event, and last month owner was there personally making sure we had everything we wanted. I can't think of a single reason to go back to the Roadhouse (other than to save 2 blocks walking).
Here's the info again:

between Pine St & Thames St
Directions: From WTC7: Park or Barclay across West Broadway to Church St.

weather
Hey guys,
I really want to be able to make this meetup. There are alot of great presentations that I am very eager to see. But it looks like the weather might prevent me from getting to the meetup if the Metro North stops running. Is there any way we can record and broadcast the meetup? I would hate to miss all of this. Let me know if it is possible. I will do whatever I can to get there, but my fate lies with the Metro North.
Thanks,
Kevin

Mitchell Tannenbaum (opensanta) may need a place to stay tonight
Hi all,
Mitchell, the guy who talked about web scraping at yesterday's meetup, could not make contact with his NYC friend last night, so I ended up putting him up at my place last night.
I won't be able to put him up tonight, though, and need to find another backup, in case he needs a place to stay tonight.
@orbgasm, @ericduran, etc. Can one of you put Mitchell up tonight, if necessary?
