I've been working with members of the Drupal association, particularly Jacob Redding and Moshe Weitzman, and the infrastructure team to help calculate some statistics to measure the growth of GDO. I've got a blog post going into more detail coming up. I'll link to it shortly.

Questions about membership spikes in 2007
Thanks for these insightful charts, Kieran. I'm curious, in the first chart, why are there several membership spikes in 2007, where # of new joins jumps way up in one month, compared to the months before and after it. So, what happened in the months of January, April, August and December (2007) to cause these spikes?
(On a separate note, why did this comment get flagged as potential spam?)

Changes to D.O?
I don't have any supporting data to explain why those peaks occurred. I can speculate that changes on D.O. helped to expose GDO to more people through the addition of Jobs, Events links on D.O.

Drupal events, Drupal.org redesign
might be worth also checking
might be worth also checking drupal.org traffic for spikes as well - December would've seen Drupal 6 release candidates for example.
Spikes
ebrittweb - if one hypothesizes that new releases of Drupal would drive interest, and consequently membership on g.d.o., then the statistics presented here support that hypothesis, as evidenced by the spikes at May 1, 2006 (Drupal 4.7 release) and early Jan, 2007 (Drupal 5). Not sure what hypothesis the more recent spikes would support... DrupalCon increases membership in g.d.o, perhaps? This would be early March....

DGO join hypotheses
Hi puregin,
Thanks for your input. I agree with your hypotheses re: D4.7 and D5 releases, as well as influence of DrupalCon Boston buildup.
I'd love to see what's happened in the last four months, given how steep the last slope was.
