Are you interested in helping to spread the word about Drupal? LinuxWorld Expo is coming to Moscone Center Aug 4-7. Come share, learn, and have fun with other Drupal and open source fans. LinuxWorld Expo is geared more towards enterprise solutions. If you're interested in open source (beyond Drupal), this is a great opportunity to learn from others and to share what you know about Drupal.

I'm working with Amazon to coordinate the effort to host a booth at LinuxWorld Expo.

  • If you'd like to volunteer to help spread the word about Drupal and the open source revolution, this is where the party is.
  • If you've already posted to volunteer in a previous post, please verify I captured that info (below).

following are some of the planning details, and at the moment this post is a skeleton; but it is a wiki, please treat it as such ;-)

Die-cut Drupalicons

Chris Charlton - Thu, 2008-07-10 00:37

Print on blue paper and chop out Drupalicons! People will love them... but really...

I'd like to make sure you take some printed sheets of Drupal groups in California. XTND.US can sponsor those user group sheets, and maybe take some LA Drupal pamphlets I made.

Promotional materials?

Hey, gang. I just finished writing and recording a Drupal instructional video series for Lynda.com. (It'll be out in the next few months. This is actually the first place I've mentioned it in public. :) ) If I get them in time, could I pass out Lynda.com tchotchkies, such as free passes / t-shirts / whatever they give me?

Thanks,

What topics did you cover for Lynda.com? PSU is in talks with them to gain access to all their tutorials for students to use but if there's Drupal ones in there too I can get some staff pointed to them too!

The Lynda.com course

tgeller's picture
tgeller - Thu, 2008-07-31 17:36

Hey, Bryan! I'm afraid I can't give the full table of contents yet, but it's basically a "Drupal 101" course. In about 65 videos, it covers:

  • Requirements
  • Installation
  • Configuration
  • Customization (basic, not theme development)
  • Modules
  • Content

...and touches briefly on security, launching, best practices, and the Drupal community. To give you an idea of its extent: It includes a bit about CCK but not about Views, which we found to be too advanced a topic for this course.

BTW, I welcome ideas for promotion... just catch me in the booth or send me a note. (Let's not clog up this forum. :) )

Cheers,

Great stuff today!

Great stuff today! Unfortunately I can't make it tomorrow (Weds). I'm visiting family and some unexpected plans came up so I'm going to spend some time with them. I'll see you guys on Thursday!

Tuesday report

tgeller's picture
tgeller - Wed, 2008-08-06 07:00

I had a good time today. I just realized that, despite usually having 3-5 people in the booth, we were all busy! That became apparent when a boothmate offered to help me with a multisite problem I've been having... but we always got interrupted within 30 seconds by a curious new visitor. This show seems to be a good fit.

A special nod to Kieran, who got the booth up and running quickly despite several problems -- and having to give a talk an hour (?) after we opened.

BTW, I'm not needed in court Wednesday, so I'm not longer tentative for the 3-5 shift. Unfortunately I probably will be called in on Thursday, and if so it'd be good to have more help for the 10-11:30 and 11:30-1:30 shifts on that day. I'm changing the schedule to reflect all this.

Thanks to everyone

Thanks to everyone who helped! The show was a lot of fun and I enjoyed meeting or catching up with all the drupal folk that came out!

The show attendance seemed lower than I expected - SCALE 6x seemed to have much higher traffic - but then again, it was a more compressed format. It made me wonder if OSCON so close impacted attendance - or if it has more to do with other factors (such as unconferences or something else). I'd love to know the attendance #, but I can't find if they've been released.

However, the Drupal booth was busy even though we were hidden in the back row. (about 3 booths down from Joomla). I want to reiterate tgeller's message that we were really busy and it lasted most of the week, typically with 2-3 volunteers talking with attendees at all times. So at least the booth was busy, and hopefully the local SFDUG / BDUG / SJDUG see some new faces as a result.

It was also interesting to hang with the Joomla crowd last night. Open Source is alive and well & always so fun to exchange ideas!
