Drupal Florida Health?
Hey there ... I'm heading down to central florida for a bit of time and am curious about the general health and vibrancy of the Drupal community in that part of the world. What are the things that are working for this community and where are the areas that need some additional help? Who's using Drupal down there and what kind of cool stuff are you doing with it?
I maintain a couple modules and have actively been developing in Drupal for over 3 years now. One of the things I feel I'm going to miss the most by moving down there is the face to face community time we have here in Colorado. I'm looking forward to helping foster new friendships and ideas in the central florida area.
See you soon.

Welcome, Kevin!
Hi Kevin,
Eric Marden from Bonnier, here. There is quite a group of developers using Drupal in Central Florida, though seasoned talent may be in short supply (if our own hiring needs are any evidence). This group actually has a large monthly meet-up, every third Saturday. Also, our 'general' tech community is quite vibrant, and well organized. We have a yearly BarCamp event (http://barcamporlando.org), a monthly happy hour (http://floridacreatives.com), a weekly co-working event (http://groups.google.com/group/coworking-orlando), monthly likemind.orl events (http://likemind.us/), and a slew of user groups and meetups found on our 'tech events' calendar (http://is.gd/1QvC).
As you can see, lots of stuff to do and get involved with. Look us up when you get settled in.
Hi Eric ... I remember the
Hi Eric ... I remember the Bonnier offices from when I was down there deploying the popsci website. My impressions from that visit seem in-line with what you mention ... a strong general tech community with an up and coming Drupal community. I really appreciate the links and am definitely looking forward to being able to say hi and talk tech. It looks like there are some really interesting things going on down there.
meetups
Kevin,
Glad to hear you're motivated to get involved in Florida's Drupal community. As for Drupal in Central Florida, things are definitely on the upswing, with our monthly meetings well attended and the initial steps in a day-long DrupalCamp in the next couple of months.
We're always looking for speakers at the meetups - and we'll definitely need additional workshop leaders when we have the DrupalCamp. Check out this post for a list of upcoming meetups and proposed topics. Let me know if you're interested helping out.
Thanks,
-mike
HI Mike, I have several
HI Mike,
I have several presentations that I've used at different Drupalcons, meetups and camps that I'd be happy to present on once I get down there. I've been working with a group in Denver/Boulder to run meetups for a while and am organizer of the DBUG meetup.com group as well as an assistant organizer of the Drupal Meetups worldwide group. We also just finished up putting together DrupalCamp Colorado which was a great event. We were able to pull in a decent amount of presenters both locally and remotely (as far away as Poland) to give the attendees an informative and enjoyable experience. I'd definitely like to share some of the things that worked for us and what we learned from the process. From what I understand of my schedule at this point it looks like the first meeting I'll be able to attend will be the October 18th. I look forward to meeting you.

well, I am in the Miami area...
and I can find practically no one doing DRUPAL. Its very barren here... there is one very small DRUPAL meetup, but that is it.
I am really the only person I know doing DRUPAL here.
so, if anyone up north wants to do a winter DRUPAL camp in Miami, send me an email... There are people that would like to attend, and I would love to help set it up...
I should mention something else...
Miami and ft Lauderdale should be a technical Mecca of the drupal world. there is a lot of capital, lots of entertainment industry, and its actually getting affordable to live. plus its a great place to live and there is office space in some places at about 10/squ foot. access to latin america... you name it
i really wish someone would do a DRUPALCON Latin america in miami.
