Intro to Drupal Hands-On for Drupal Camp NYC 5

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome to join the group and then edit it. Be bold!

Attendees!

Follow the below instructions to make sure you are ready for this session BEFORE you come to DrupalCampNYC!

Why? Biggest reason is to make sure you have all the files that may be used during the presentation (no guarantee we'll use them all!) You may be able to get a network connection and download them there, but from experience at prior Drupal camps not everyone is successful hooking up to the wireless. To be safe rather than sorry follow the below instructions so you have the files already on your machine...

Are you a newbie to Drupal wanting to see "what it's all about"? Want to leave Drupal camp with a working install of Drupal running on your machine to play with? Want to get a solid overview of how to set up Drupal, create and configure a basic site, and use some cool modules to add functionality? Then this is where you'll want to be on Saturday.

What you need to do BEFORE you come to DrupalCampNYC

  1. If you bring a laptop (with power cord and extension cable - outlets are in short supply!) you can install Drupal on your computer and follow along with the set up. This is recommended as it means that you'll have something to play with when you've finished the session.
  2. Download Drupal 6.9 to your computer
  3. Make sure you have a program that can open .tar.gz files
    1. For Windows 7-Zip is one freeware option. (Macs and Linux have this ability built-in.)
  4. Download some software - but don't install it - we'll go through that first thing in the morning Saturday. This software lets your computer act like a web server, so we can install Drupal on it.
    1. For Macs download MAMP. Download the latest version (unless it is not compatible with your version of the Mac OS)
    2. For Windows download WAMPServer
      1. Download the 34 MB Installer file
    3. For Linux download follow the instructions for your distro to setup the AMP components on your machine (Apache, MySQL, and PHP). Here are Ubuntu instructions from the Drupal web site (it says Gutsy, but should be same for Hardy).

Here is the proposed schedule

As with any Barcamp all is subject to change the day of the camp.

What Time (approx.) Presenter Description
Help Setting up your "AMP" stack (MAMP, WAMPServer, etc.) 9 am - 10:30 Peter Dowling (winstond), Sam Tresler, anyone else who wants to help out. If you want to help out please download the above to a thumb drive so you can help anyone who either didn't get the message to download these or whatever. Get help from experienced folks getting your machine ready for "hands on" while you have breakfast!
What is Drupal? 10:30 - 11:30 Steven Merril (smerril), Ezra (ezra-g) What is a CMS? What is Drupal? jargon, who uses it, community plumbing, why we heart it, etc.
Set Up Drupal (Hands On) 11:30 - 12:30 Peter Dowling (winstond), (others??) Walk through setting up an initial site from creating the database, running the install, and initial config.
Create a basic site (Hands On) 1:30 - 3:30 Peter Dowling (winstond) (others??) We'll take our fresh Drupal install and put it through its paces. We'll install modules to enhance functionality, create content, set up user permissions, talk about blocks and layout, work on our menus, and maybe even try some different themes.

If you are interested, please see the original discussion about what the Intro session would look like for this drupal camp at http://groups.drupal.org/node/13828. If you think anything is missing from this plan or if you want to jump in to help then please be bold and edit this page.

Dev Environment, Drupal Installation Section

At past Drupal Camps, we've seen that walking a group of people through installing MAMP/WAMP etc and Drupal can take up to four hours. I propose that it is a better use of time at the camp to direct people head of time to the various resources (such as videos, text instructions and #Drupal-Suport) for installing Drupal and _AMP. Then, we take a maximum of 25 minutes of precious Drupalcamp time to help people through any last minute snags, and then start our presentation.

Or, set up some live cds

If a few of these were set up ahead of time (with some selected contrib modules) it would definitely streamline the process and give people something to take with them.

Agree

Agree. I put the time for this above as 9 to 10:30. Since camp officially starts at 10 that pretty much means people do the AMP bit for themselves at breakfast time with help from anyone who feels like helping out. The "what to do before you come" I pretty much pulled from last Drupal camp with minor mods. When I have a moment I'll add links to videos on lullabot for how to get MAMP and WAMP working.

Thanks for creating the wiki page for this.

Peter

Update

winston's picture

I think this page is ready to go. All download links are there. Didn't bother with lullabot vid links as they're a bit out of date.

See everybody Saturday!

What modules should we include

enginpost's picture

In addition to Drupal 6.4, what else should we have ready to go for this session. I am a complete noob, but I have WIMP (Vista, IIS,MySQL, PHP) running on my laptop and Drupal 6.x (not sure which) setup at the moment. What else should I have setup? CCK, Views, some specific Menu widgetie things (see, I am totally a noob)?

Update: I'm an idiot! That was the last link above wasn't it (step 5 in the "what do you need to do before" list)? I will download it and have it ready to go!

Totally looking forward to getting neck deep in this! Whohoo!

MySQL server is red

Downloading Zip Files

keishamia's picture

Hey Guys,

I had my IT guy set me up with MAMP, but we were not able to download the zip file that includes the modules. Here is the link to the error page http://senduit.com/expired. It says that that file has expired.

Please help. I would like to be prepared when I come to the camp.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Keisha

This page is for the session

tom_o_t's picture

This page is for the session at the last camp (5) back in 2008, so things may change a bit this time around. The times and content will certainly be different. I've updated the link to download Drupal 6.9 (it was 6.3 last time) and deleted the link to the out of date files. I'll have a chat with the other people who will be leading this session and update in the next few days.
