What's in a word(mark)?
Hi All,
I just thought I'd drop a note in here about some thoughts on branding we're having, and particularly, the Drupal Wordmark.
http://www.markboultondesign.com/news/detail/whats_in_a_wordmark/
This doesn't mean we're ditching Druplicon by any means. What it does mean is that we're progressing the Drupal Wordmark (and associated styleguide) beyond an off-the-shelf typeface.
Leisa has been doing a great job of documenting our thinking on the redesign process so far, and I'm planning to do the same with some of the more look and feel/branding work as well. Please follow along and let me know your thoughts as you go.
Thanks,
Mark

Hmm. You say you're not ditching the druplicon?
I wish you would. It has to be one of the world's least appealing logos.
Save the druplicon!
Personally, I like it. It is connected to the Name. Its a small drop. It has personality :) And without it a part of Drupals identity would be lost, i guess for many in the community.
What makes the Google Logo better? Or check out this one www.michelin.com ;-) I think its more about how a logo it is presented.
I liked the quote from Marks presentation in Szeged. "Brands are not Logos, brands are stories." For a new user (or outisder) the druplicon does not matter. But for the "insiders" that strange looking drop became part of the story. Save the druplicon! :))
Favicon?
I was wondering if you had any ideas yet about what drupal.org would use for a favicon if the main branding for the site is a wordmark and not a logo or logotype. Currently drupal.org uses a very small version of Druplicon, which is also the default favicon for all Drupal sites.
I personally wouldn't mind a move away from Druplicon for drupal.org because right now if one has a bunch of different Drupal sites open in different tabs, many of them are identified with the same favicon and are difficult to tell apart.
we shoud have a favicon
from a performance stand point, we should have a favicon (whatever it looks like)

Hi Mark. I posted a concept wordmark and slogan and would love to hear your feedback. Unfortunately, comments on the post you link to above are turned off so this seemed like the next best place.
Use of wordmark in a logo
Hi.
Are there any rules or guidelines on what to pay attention while creating a logo that contains the word "Drupal"?
e.g. something like "do not use the same typeface" or "try to avoid using the same color". Maybe with some examples of do's and dont's?
thanks in advance,
Stefan

"This guide is only for use on official Drupal.org sites. "
Yeah, but what makes a Drupal site "official" besides being part of drupal.org? How about other sites?
Alex
Hm, ok. Thanks. I already
Hm, ok. Thanks.
I already knew this style-guide but couldn't find any specifications about how a custom logo should (or shouldn't) look like.
Shall we (as noted on http://infrastructure.drupal.org/drupal.org-style-guide/logo.html) use "an approved electronic version" that isn't "embellished, outlined, or altered in any way"?
We tried different times but all of our drafts where rejected by Tiffany because our changes on the original logo "do not differentiate the wordmark from the official Drupal version enough".
Which one is valid? Using the original wordmark or customize it in a way it differs "enough"?
I think this is a topic affecting the whole community - particularly regional sites - because its not clear what is allowed.
thanks,
Stefan
Usage of the Drupal name and wordmark
Dries owns the trademark on the word Drupal itself; my understanding is that the new Drupal wordmark is the copyrighted property of the Drupal Association and can only be used or modified with their explicit permission.
Dries posted a draft trademark policy back in February that covers how the Drupal name could be used by local groups for events like Drupalcamps, but as far as I know, that policy is not "official".
Usage of the Druplicon mascot is restricted only by the terms of the GPL, however, so that may be an option. Otherwise, I'd recommend contacting Larry Garfield (Crell) for advice on your particular situation.
policy
Yeah, I know. But unfortunately it doesn't cover how the logo may be used. Therefore we need a precise directive if and how to use the logo (e.g. with
TMadded to the unmodified logo; completely modified logo; etc.).Stefan
Right, my understanding is
Right, my understanding is that right now, any requests to use the logo (modified or not) outside of drupal.org need to be approved by the Drupal Association.
correct
and you may expect to get a 'no' for an answer. We asked when building drupal.nl , and afaik the logo is only to be used on d.org sites.
it's difficult, as now were using a weak derivative which is hardly communicating well. I think druplicon is indeed the better fallback option in this case.
